Personal Statement

Beau Michael Sparks, #11, 6’0”, 170 lbs, c/o 2023, 4.56 s 40-y, 35” VJ

My name is Beau Sparks, and I would like to play football in college. As of January 2022, I am a junior, 6’0”, 170 lbs, and quickly getting bigger, faster, and stronger. I play football and run track for the Franklin Cougars in El Paso, TX, which is a Texas 6A high school (District 1). My GPA is 3.57, and I will graduate in 2023.

As a junior, I had a breakout football season in 2021. Our team finished 8-3. We were undefeated in district play (7-0) and won the Texas UIM District 1-6A Championship. Wearing the #11 jersey, I started as left wide receiver on offense and strong safety on defense. I also returned punts and kickoffs. In fact, I never came out of any game for longer than 1 series. According to MaxPreps, I completed 72 receptions for 1,251 yards and 16 touchdowns. After 11 games, I average 113.7 yards per game, 17.4 yards per reception, and the longest was a 90-yard TD reception against Pebble Hills on November 5. As a wide receiver, I am ranked at #9 across all Texas 6A high schools, #30 in the State of Texas, and #134 in the nation (Football Receiving Stats Leaders - MaxPreps). On defense, I had 64 tackles, 3 interceptions, and was the leading tackler during the first half of the season. As a sophomore in track, I ran the open 100m, 200m, and 3rd leg of the 4x100m. In the 4x100m, my team took 1st place in the district, 1st place in regionals, and was disqualified in the Texas 6A Super Regionals for dropping the baton. My PR in the electronically-timed 100m was 11.2 s, and my goal in 2022 is to run a sub-11 100m.

During the season, I was recognized 6 times as a top 5 receiver in El Paso by Ed Stansbury on Channel 9 Overtime. I was given the #1 receiver recognition twice (week 5, week 9), and I became “Stansbury Certified” on air on October 17 (video). On September 24, I caught a 1st-quarter touchdown pass from #6 Cameron Byrd during our homecoming game against Montwood, and that play was selected as the Channel 9 Overtime “Play of the Week” (video). After the 2021 season, I was unanimously selected to First-team Offense and First-team Defense as an All-District player for Texas District 1-6A, which is the largest high school football classification in Texas (El Paso Times article). I was also honored to be selected as First-team Wide Receiver for the El Paso All-City Team, which was chosen across 38 high school football teams in the El Paso metro area (pop. 1 million, El Paso Times article).

I was born in Norman, OK, where I lived through the 3rd grade. In 2014, we moved to Lincoln, NE, where I played Lincoln Youth Football (4th – 8th grade) and as a freshman for Lincoln Southwest High School (Class A). In 2020, we moved to El Paso, TX, where I currently attend Franklin High School.

I have been surrounded by collegiate athletes my whole life. Most notably was my great uncle, John Green. Uncle Green played football at Tulsa University and was drafted by the NFL in 1944. Wearing #89, Uncle Green played left defensive end for the Philadelphia Eagles from 1947-1951, winning the NFL Championships in 1948 and 1949. In fact, the 1948-49 Eagles are recognized as the 42nd best team in NFL history. Uncle Green was invited to the Pro Bowl and won first team All-Pro honors in 1950. From 1961-64, my grandpa, Mike Sparks (nephew of John Green), walked on and earned a scholarship in football for Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) in Weatherford, OK. As a freshman in 1986-87, my biological father, David Sparks, also played football and baseball for SWOSU. After graduating from Midland Lee High School in 1967, my other grandpa, Roger Camp, was a scholarship football player for East Central University (ECU) in Ada, OK from 1968-72. From 1993-96, my stepdad, Joel Cramer, competed as an NCAA rower for Creighton University (CU) men’s crew team. My oldest brother, Nick Cramer, was a scholarship NCAA gymnasts for Springfield College (SC) from 2016-20. My second oldest brother, Dane Cramer, is currently a scholarship NCAA gymnast for SC, where he competes on the pommel horse, parallel bars, floor, and vault. Clearly, I have a tremendous support system for successfully balancing academics and athletics in college. I feel well-positioned and ready to compete at the next level.
