My competitive spirit and leadership began to show at an early age. I started playing competitive sports in third grade including basketball, soccer and football. I also started running cross country and track in middle school. I excelled in all of them and was a leader on each team. I was honored to be the first recipient of The Village School Knights Shining Armour Award, which recognized me as the top student-athlete who exemplified what it means to be a Knight, through my consistent display of sportsmanship, hard work and commitment.
My passion for basketball began in seventh grade when I was asked to play up on the first high school team for The Village School. Even though we lost every game that season, I loved the challenge of playing against kids who were bigger and better than I was. It motivated me to work harder because my talent wasn’t enough. I wanted to be able to compete at a higher level.
While basketball became my focus, I know that everything I learned from the other sports I played helped me to be a better basketball player and a better person. I learned the value of camaraderie and being a good teammate, as well as the importance of not being just physically strong, but more importantly, mentally strong.
In addition to teamwork and mental toughness, I believe there are three characteristics that differentiate me as a person, on and off the court: Hard Work, Heart and Hustle. I believe that hard work beats talent, so I always work harder than the person next to me. To be successful in anything, you have to have heart and desire. From a young age I have always had the heart of a lion and the desire to win in everything that I do. Hustle is giving 100% to whatever you are doing. I believe that there is no excuse to give anything below your best effort.
Above everything else, the trait I value the most as a person is respect. Respect is earned when it is given. I’ve been consistently recognized for the respect I show to all people - whether my peers, teammates, coaches, teachers, or even people I don’t know. One of my current teachers recently wrote a note to my parents recognizing my “high level of respect, self-reliance, maturity and initiative that go well above and beyond that of a freshman.” All of these are traits of a leader and will help me to be successful in everything I do.
I am looking for a college experience that will challenge me both academically and athletically,
allow me to strengthen my leadership ability, and ultimately provide a platform for growth and future success.
