Personal Statement

PERSONAL STATEMENT

Liam Winters

I have played soccer from as early as I can remember and have developed a true love for the sport.  I started playing by age four in our town programs and at our local indoor facility and have continued playing ever since. What I love most about the sport is the fact I have fun while playing, and also enjoy the competitiveness and improving my game.

Throughout the years I played more and more competitively.  I started playing in our town travel league, then the Euro Champs league, and eventually advanced to Premiere teams. I played two years for the Flash Academy at ages 10-11, Empire United from ages 12-15, and am presently back playing for the Flash Academy. I have met some great coaches and players from these teams and have learned very much about many aspects of the game. I have always gotten along well with my teammates, strive to motivate them, and enjoy working together to improve our individual games and team play.  I want to play at the collegiate level to continue playing competitively and continue to improve upon the technical skills and tactical aspects of the game.

Playing soccer has also taught me many valuable lessons about life in general and shaped my personality. Playing sports has taught me how to be disciplined, dedicated, work with others, step up as a leader, budget time, and the importance of hard work.  Soccer has also taught me how to overcome obstacles. When I was in 7th grade I did not make our school Modified Soccer Team. Needless to say, I was first angry then upset and disappointed.  I decided to make it my mission to improve my play as much as possible that year and answer back at the next season's try-outs. The next year I tried out for the Junior Varsity Team and was the only 8th grader to make the squad.  That made me proud and was probably one of the most valuable lessons I have learned regarding hard work and payoff. I strive to react in the same way in all aspects of my life and realize that hard work and believing in myself are critical to success.
