Basketball became important to me starting in elementary school. Each year that I played I knew basketball was going to be in my future. As a 5’4” point guard I knew I had to work harder to gain a competitive edge on my opponents. I knew I had to become quicker and more skilled with the ball. By my sophomore year I had earned the starting point guard position on the varsity team. This is where I learned the most as an athlete, and as a leader. Being the starting point guard as an underclassman, with a team of all upperclassmen helped turn me into a confident leader. The best part of my high school experience so far has been competing in and winning the Connecticut State Championship my junior year. This experience helped me learn how to deal with the nerves and expectations of a pressure situation, and helped me grow as a player.
It has been a great experience to have supportive teammates in the class ahead of me. They have mentored me into becoming the player I am today and have helped develop my skills on and off the court that benefit me all around. Being part of a program that lost in the earlier rounds of the state tournament two years in a row, and then winning the third, taught me patience and that trusting in the process of working on not only your game, but being a good teammate, pays off. I value my leadership qualities and ability to adapt to situations on and off the court and believe that I would be an asset to any team.
