My name is Shannon and I am a student of the graduating Class of 2018 at Walter G. O'Connell Copiague High School. I have been playing volleyball since the 6th grade and it has definitely influenced me to become a better athlete and take pride in leadership and my teammates over the years. I succeed both academically and athletically in school. My 7th grade year, I started to play volleyball for a new up-coming club team Rival VC where I played on an older team. The following years I became a captain as I continued to play above my age level. I have taken part on my high school's varsity team since my freshman year, I was a starter by the following season, as of my sophomore year I have over 100 kills and 70 digs with a hitting percentage of .139% . My passion for volleyball has driven me to the need to be a better player, I am frequently looking for ways to improve my skills with a volleyball or with my teammates and peers. I am a very strong leader on the court and off, in middle school I was captain of 3 sports teams, and president of 2 separate clubs one being National Junior Honor Society. As a freshman in high school, I was elected President of my class and I continue to hold this position making positive choices for my peers. I am involved on volleyball teams from September to May every year, however my busiest season is my "off-season". During the summer, I take part in numerous volleyball skill camps and I play for 2 beach volleyball leagues. I love volleyball because it is my stress reliever and it comes to me as a second nature, I love the competition and the motivation to be better, faster and stronger. Since I have started playing sports, it has shown me key characteristics only gained by the love of game. I have self- taught myself many skills and I love helping my teammates pick up a new skill as well if they don't understand. I believe the most important skill in volleyball is teamwork. Without teammates you don't have a team, the relationship you have with your team opens other skills like communication and knowing one's strengths and weaknesses on and off the court. Teamwork enables players to pick each other up because being part of a team isn't all about physical skills, it demonstrates the need of a positive mindset of a team and not an individual player.
