Alex Merchant '19 Recruiting Profile

"My name is Alex Merchant and I am a SS that can play all infield positions. I am a 2019 graduate at Liberty High School in Brentwood CA. I started playing baseball when I was 3 years old, and although I played other sports, baseball has always been my passion. When I was younger I was always one of the smaller kids on my teams so I had to work a lot harder, as I was not blessed with being a bigger and stronger kid like my teammates. I’ve been lucky enough to have great coaches throughout my playing days, and I have used their feedback to work on all areas of the game! Though my measurable skills started off average, I worked my tail off to make my weaknesses a strength in all areas of the game.

In January of 2017 I ran a 7.52 60 yard dash. I worked extremely hard on improving this time and in June of 2018 I ran a 6.89 60 yard dash. I increased my arm strength as well using a long toss and weight lifting program. In January of 2017 I was throwing in the mid 70’s from SS to 1^st base. Since then I have been in the low to mid 80’s. I have always been a hard worker and continue to try and improve my game every day. I have a batting cage in my backyard which I use on a daily basis. Even after baseball practice, I will come home and get in extra work in my cage. Though I’m not the biggest guy on the field, my knowledge of the game, execution of the fundamentals, and overall heart & motivation to be great allow me to have success every opportunity I get. I have finally put on some size and strength. I am currently 5’11’’ and 180 pounds. I continue to work hard to be the best player I can be. Academically I want to study mechanical engineering and have been taking classes in high school to get ready. I am looking for a baseball program that will continue to push me to be the best player I can be. If you want a hard working coachable player that will do whatever it takes to make the team better I am your guy."
