It was the transition from “coach-pitch” to “kid-pitch” when I was 7 years-old that defined me as a pitcher. I was so eager to accept the ball from the coach and take my place on the mound. I felt comfortable right away, and have ever since. Looking back on it, I had what it takes even way back then - ability and a head for the game.
If you mention my name, “Cole Millinger” to anyone in my town, or surrounding towns, they’ll likely say, “that kid’s a great pitcher.” Well that’s because pitching is what I do - team after team, season after season, year after year. I’ve played Little League, Babe Ruth, All Stars, Middle School, Varsity High School (since freshman year), American Legion, Fall and Spring Travel Teams. I’ve made a conscious decision to play for my town, school, district, and county -- our local competition is really strong and I love the pride in representing the home team. As a starting pitcher, I’ve led my summer All Star teams to some really exciting district and state championships - and it feels great to see our championship banner at our home fields.
I’ve learned that I am very comfortable “playing up.” As a 14 year old I was asked to play on our town’s summer American Legion team. I was the youngest player by far; playing with and against 16-19 year olds. Similarly I was the only freshman asked to play on our high school Varsity team. I’m confident I can take this capability with me to college.
Coaches are really comfortable with me as their top starting pitcher. I can go the distance of a full 7 inning game and often get stronger as the innings progress. I am efficient with my pitches and have thrown complete games and perfect games. I’ve been told by college coaches that I have solid mechanics and great control of my pitches. But most importantly, I am confident and in-control on the mound. I keep my cool and remain level-headed. I take the game one pitch at a time.
I’m always looking to improve. With the help of my pitching coach, a former minor league pitcher with the Oakland A's organization and then college pitching coach, I’ve recently been working on tweaking some of my mechanics. I’m thrilled that these changes are paying off! Now I have 4 pitches that are all working really well - 4 seam fastball, 2 seam fastball, changeup, and curveball. My focus for this fall is to get my fast ball speed consistently in the mid-80s (up from the low-80s). I’m spending time in the gym to strengthen my lower half and core. I’m confident I’ll get there.
I’m really excited about the opportunity to continue to pitch in college. To be honest, I couldn’t image my life without baseball. Why would I stop playing just because I’m graduating high school? I’m really interested in playing for a college that has very strong academics, especially for business majors. I also want to be part of a team that really enjoys playing together and has a strong sense of trust. As a pitcher, there is nothing better than having a strong defense that works with you and makes plays. I want to be able to contribute my passion and dedication to a college environment with a lot of school spirit.
I’m really looking forward to taking this next step and playing at the college level. I’m confident that my baseball future will continue to be bright!
