Hi. My name is Perry Corda Jr. and I’m currently a Junior at Methacton High School in Eagleville, PA. I am looking forward to playing baseball at a college with a competitive club which I can bring my fielding and hitting skills to help the team win games but also one that will challenge and grow my abilities. I have loved baseball since first playing when I was 6 or 7 and work to improve my skills so coaches will always put me on the field, every pitch, every play. I became a catcher because no one else wanted to do it, or were scared because our pitcher was a lot bigger than us then – I think he hit his growth spurt early. Anyway, I really enjoy it – especially being involved in every pitch of the game and even more as I grew because I began to understand how to read batters’ stances, their reaction to pitches, their swing, etc. and eventually call pitches.
I believe there are a few of qualities that set me apart from my peers. One is best described by what one of my past coaches told my parents, “I love coaching Perry because he is a sponge. He is humble, takes direction well and immediately puts it into practice in his play.” The second is my mental strength. I always see players reacting to their frustrations on the field, for example, pitch calls not going their way, an error by another player, etc. My approach is to leverage emotion into making my next play flawless and it focuses me to improve. Though I’m not a pitcher I have been asked often to come in late in a game at critical times to get our team off the field which, I’m told, is due to my mental focus along with my throwing accuracy. The third is another coach describing me as “the most versatile player he has ever coached, I can literally put Perry in any position on the field and he will do well”. When I made the Methacton Varsity team in my freshman year, the coaching staff told me that I scored the highest in the depth charts at every position across the entire team.
I can’t say this has been all me, as my family has always encouraged me and supported me in all my travel teams, practices, workouts, etc. My friends and team mates always pushed me to be better when my confidence was low. I have a small, close set of friends from a couple different sports that we all pump each other up – a great bunch of guys. This goes into school as well as with some of them helping me work harder on my courses, studying and grades which are not my strongest skill. I have to work harder at these than my baseball, it comes more natural and I enjoy is so much more. My goal is to increase my 3.0 to a 3.2 before I graduate. I have a dream of possibly playing major league ball someday, but know that won’t be easy so am pursuing an athletic training degree so I will always be close to baseball, if I can’t be in it.
I truly believe I have what is needed to compete and excel at the next level. I truly don’t believe I have hit the peak of what I can do.
