As I prepare for my senior year of high school, I can’t help but reflect on my journey not only through school but also through cheer. My cheer story began in 7th grade when I decided to try out for cheer with a group of my friends. Although I did not make the cheer team that year, the experience left me with a drive to explore and learn more about cheerleading. When I joined my first all-star gym a few weeks later, the owner told me they had a team for anyone who wanted to cheer, regardless of their experience level.
Through cheer, I have gained confidence in myself and learned that with hard work, dedication, and determination, I can accomplish my goals. I am reserved and quiet in nature but when I am cheering, my passion for cheer and confidence in my abilities shines through. I am not one to be a vocal leader, but I do like to lead by example, encouraging my teammates along the way. Besides winning the 3A State Championship in 2023, some of my favorite cheer moments are the times I spent traveling to competitions with my teammates.
Over the five years I have been cheering, I have earned awards such as production chart champ, cheerleader of the year, most dedicated, best attitude, and the coaches’ award. These awards are a testament to the commitment I make to myself, my teammates, and coaches every cheer season. My parents have always told me that if I make a commitment to an activity or sport, I have to give it 100% of my effort in order to be successful. I believe this statement to be true, and I reflect on it often as the demands for school and cheer can be stressful.
While cheering for the high school varsity competition team, I also continue to cheer at a local all-star gym. There are several weeks in the season that I find myself practicing six and seven days a week, for a few hours each day. I have days where practice for one team is immediately followed by practice for another team. Even with the high demands of team practices and cheer events, I have maintained a strong GPA and have taken the more rigorous academic classes offered by my high school.
Outside of cheer, my hobbies include drawing, painting, graphic design, and spending time with my family and friends. In college I want to study forensics, anthropology, biology, or a similar major on my path to becoming a Forensic Anthropologist. Just like with my first year of cheer, I know I will find the right fit to continue my cheer journey at the collegiate level.
