I didn’t realize how much I loved field hockey until I noticed a girl in my English class had a field hockey stick and I jumped at the opportunity to practice doing what I missed. Field hockey started three years ago for me when I joined our school's grade 7 team, shortly after I found my passion for environmental arts. It wasn’t until my grade 10 year that I was able to play again after COVID-19. My team didn’t have a goalkeeper because theirs had graduated last year and with my experience in net in soccer I thought I would give it a shot and I’ve never gone back. This is my second year as a goalkeeper, my third year playing the sport and I have learned so much through field hockey, both in the position and balancing all other aspects of my life. Playing in the Okanagan Valley you don’t have the resources or the opportunities as the teams in Vancouver and the islands do. That has always pushed me to do better because I want to surprise them and be that team you are scared of playing against. Because we don’t have water-based fields, we play on turf and although that’s slower our perseverance and determination get us to the top. Every day I strive to play better and improve my movements, timing, angles, and endurance, with our frequent out-of-town travelling I can improve on the water-based fields and against stronger teams. I hope to find a school that can challenge me academically and athletically so that I can improve in all aspects of my life and become a better person and better at what I do.
