Personal Statement

My name is Malarie Buller. I am a Junior at East Lyme High School.  I started playing  soccer at three years old for the YMCA in Pueblo Colorado.  I soon moved onto Corinthians Soccer Club.  When my family moved to Aurora, CO I played for Colorado Storm (now Colorado Rapids Youth Soccer club), this is where I began my premier soccer career, also while at Colorado Storm I got my referee certification.  In 2018, just before my freshman year of high school my family moved to Connecticut.  I was recruited by Doca Futebol Academy at a soccer camp in CT that summer.  As a freshman I played Varsity soccer for East Lyme High School and was also a member of the ODP player pool.  During the summer between my freshman and sophomore years I had surgery to repair damage to my knees after years of wear and tear so my sophomore year was a recovery season and I played JV.  At this point I switched my focus with soccer and started playing for CT Rush Shoreline (now known as Northeast Rush).  Working with the coaches at CT Rush is amazing and I have the experience to work with coaches that have coached at the collegiate level.  This made me rethink my high school soccer career.  In order to keep training with the high level coaches at CT Rush during the fall, I choose to quit playing high school soccer and began playing field hockey!  I really feel that this was a great move for me, I still got the comradery of high school sports and was able to maintain a high level of soccer training.  I have spent much of my career playing defense, but I also really enjoy outside-mid and striker.  I feel that my family's many moves that forced me to change clubs was very beneficial for me; every coach has something great to offer and teach, and I have had the opportunity to learn from a lot of amazing coaches.  I am excited for my next phase of life and soccer and can't wait to see what the next level of play will bring.

  • Skillset Overview Technical Abilities - 87 / 100 Passing - Creates opportunities for teammates with accurate passes. Rarely over or under hits the ball. Defending - Aggressive as a defender. Good footwork and positioning, and seems to enjoy the 1v1 battles. Tactical Abilities - 87 / 100 Reading The Game - Does well seeing the first level of pressure and making appropriate decision on the ball. Defensive Awareness - Understands team defensive schemes, shows understanding of positioning and angles. Physical Abilities - 87 / 100 Speed - Great speed overall, in particular when running into space. Will be an important asset going forward. Agility - Showed good agility. Good body positioning and footwork helped you change directions quickly. Mental Abilities - 89 / 100 Coachable - Responds well to coaching. Asked good questions and seemed to enjoy the learning process. Team Player - Great team-first attitude. Was encouraging and supportive to teammates throughout camp. Coach's Comments Malarie is a gritty defender, and definitely brings the work ethic to the team. She is able to break up play and distribute from the back line, and has a knack for understanding when to join the attack. She still has plenty of time to continue to build on these skills and develop into a great fit for a college program. It is very important that we are able to depend on our first touch. Find a ball and a wall and practice until a quality backfoot first touch becomes habit. Dominating the air game is the key to success in the college game. Continue to work on judging the ball out of the air and being brave in 50/50s. Be aware of what is going on both on your side and on the opposite side, and use that awareness to find moments as an outside back to join the attack and overload your side.
