My interest in field hockey began at the age of 11 when I participated in a summer camp offered by Oak Park & River Forest High School. That summer I discovered my love for the sport. I continued to develop my skills through programs offered by Windy City Field Hockey for a few years and eventually joined the Rise Travel team. As a freshman, I was selected for the highschool JVA team and through hard work, I made the Varsity team the following year.
I have always been a midfielder up until the end of my freshman year when I was encouraged to try defense. My coach noticed my tendency to play a more defensive midfield as well as my ability to effectively anticipate and communicate the actions of the opposing team. At first, I felt out of my comfort zone but quickly adapted and found my talents were better suited for defense. In my sophomore year, I consistently started as a left defender and was able to further develop my skills. Although defense is my primary position, I also play on the offensive side as in insert during penalty corners.
Field Hockey has helped me in so many ways, on and off the field. I have always tended to be on the shy side and the sport has enabled me to become more outgoing. I have met some of my closest friends, gained self-confidence, and found my inner competitive spirit. As a student-athlete, time management skills are essential. In addition to my fall and spring sports, I am able to manage a rigorous academic caseload and participate in extracurricular activities. The leadership experience I have gained in field hockey has carried over into my leadership roles in the student council as well as my volunteer work with the Infant Welfare Society.
I know the skills I have learned as a high school athlete will prevail at the collegiate level. I want to continue to play the sport that I love, establish long-lasting friendships, and be apart of a team that knows what hard work and dedication can accomplish.
