Personal Statement
Hi,
My name is Liz Trentmann, and I’ve been playing field hockey since I was six years old. I really love sports and have also done gymnastics since I was five and horseback riding since I was seven. I enjoy the competitive side of sports, whether I’m part of a team or competing individually. Field hockey has always been my favorite, so I had to give up gymnastics to keep playing hockey at a high level, but I still ride horses once a week.
Field hockey is a big sport in the Netherlands, and I play for a team in Amsterdam. I’m in the top under-16 team at our club, and we play in the second-highest national league, currently ranked third. I love the competitive aspect of sports and have a strong drive to win. My role is defensive; I usually play as a central defender or a wingback. I can also play as a defensive midfielder, where I lead and coach my team toward the best possible results. My biggest strength is probably my power hitting and my ability to find our forwards with long passes from my defensive position, I believe you can see some great examples in my video. I’m also a strong defender who works hard, making it difficult for opponents to get past me. Finally I am one of the options or variations that we use for the penalty corner, also based upon power hitting or using a drag flick (still learning to get better at it though ;-).
I would love to play on a college team because I believe it would be a great opportunity to learn new skills and develop myself — on the field, academically, and socially.
I work hard in school as well, and I keep my grades high. I am competitive in academics too, but I also think social life outside of school and sports is really important to help me develop and communicate well beyond social apps. I know these skills will be important for the rest of my life.
