Personal Statement
I am known as an “all-rounder” – I love both my academic work and sport. I have been awarded my National Hockey Colours and Academic Honours and am a hard worker, consistent, persistent and always willing to give it my all to succeed at anything that I put my mind to.
I absolutely love playing field hockey and have been playing since the age of 8 years. I’ve played at County level in the UK and have been playing at a South African national level during my high school years. Additionally, I play in my school (www.herschel.org.za) first team and we have won our Regional league each of my High School years. But for me, hockey is more than just about winning - I love being a part of a team and I am always amazed at how much I learn from the diversity and cultures in each of these “families” I have belonged to. I am a great team player and am known as the “glue” that keeps everyone together. On the very rare occasion that I am not either studying or playing a match or training, I enjoy swimming, playing squash, riding my motorbike, hiking or reading.
At school I love and excel at math, science and languages too. I would therefore like to follow a college pathway towards a career in the sciences or in engineering. Studying in the US will offer me the ability to explore different academic subjects because there is no need to choose majors right at the outset, unlike in my home country of South Africa. My goal in my college years is to explore, meet new people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures, research, learn, grow, and give back; all whilst doing what I love – playing hockey!
