My name is Avery Johnsen and I’ve been fascinated with sports since I laced up my first pair of hockey skates at 4 years old. This is my 12th season as an ice hockey player, which has really contributed to my success in field hockey and other sports. I’m a 2024 with a 3.8 GPA and I play varsity field hockey, ice hockey and lacrosse. I am the youngest of four siblings and growing up with three older, athletic brothers has made me fiercely competitive, gritty and hard working.
On the turf, I’m a versatile player, who is fast and agile. My ability to read the field and make quick decisions and smart passes truly sets me apart from other athletes. I’ve been told I have “phenomenal field vision” and “excellent handles” and I believe my skill set will allow me to be successful at any level. I have been a starter on my high school team since freshman year and tallied 41 points (22 goals, 19 assists) in my first two seasons. I led the team in goals and points both freshman and sophomore year and I'm on track to break the high school record by the time I graduate. Coaches tell me that I have a “nose for the net”, a “knack for scoring” and “skills that can’t be taught”. I’m a leader, on and off the field and my work ethic sets a great example for my peers. I like to think I am a considerate, respectful teammate and very coachable.
In addition to varsity field hockey, I also play for Cape Cod Field Hockey Club. For the past three seasons, I’ve played on the elite indoor team and competed in the National Indoor Tournament each season. In 2021, I scored 7 of my teams 11 goals at NIT. My spring club team qualified for the Regional Club Championship in 2021 where we placed #6 in all New England. I led my team with 4 goals and 2 assists. I also train, one on one, year-round with my club coach.
When I’m not playing sports, I love hanging out with my friends, playing with my dogs and traveling with my family. I also volunteer on weekends with the U12 Cape Cod Storm travel ice hockey team in my town and assist my high school field hockey coach with youth clinics. I really love working with the younger athletes and giving back to the programs I once played for. Thanks so much for taking the time to read this and to learn about me as an athlete and a person.
