I would like to introduce myself, my name is Sarah Bona, a sophomore at Randolph High School. I have always challenged myself athletically and academically and looking to continue. Since my freshman year I have been a three sport varsity athlete. I began my high school athletic career by being selected for the field hockey team and started throughout the entire season. I was soon able to establish myself as the leading scorer, corner inserter and helped advance our team to the semi finals of NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 1, Group 4 tournament. I continued this success by being selected as the only freshman rostered to the girls basketball team. I was not a starter, but through perseverance and drive, I was the first player subbed in each game. Lastly, I transitioned to achieving varsity letters in four events during the outdoor track and field season. With this, I also completed three honors classes.
Sophomore year I enrolled in 2 honors courses as well as an AP course to develop more confidence and skill sets within these subjects. I also decided to pair this academic challenge with my athletics. I am looking to continue this drive academically as well as athletically at the collegiate level. This year in field hockey I was the leading in scoring and assists, and the main hitter and pads on offensive corners. I also received awards as teams best offender and MVP, as well as making First-Team all conference and Honorable Mention All-County. I was chosen at the end of the season to be co-captain for the forthcoming season in fall 2020. For basketball, I became a starter and was the second leading scorer and rebounder and also received Honorable Mention All-County. As part of the starting 5, we were the first team in 30 years for Randolph to win the girls state sectional Group 4 Championship.
I have decided that field hockey is the sport in which I have developed the most passion, and want to advance my skills and play at the higher level. I started playing club for New Heights fall 2019 to begin to develop my skills for the next level. I was invited to play on the Blue U-16 Festival team in November. After going to Festival, I really gained a grasp of what the next level is like and helped give me more exposure to the game. I then went on to play indoor this past winter and played on the White U19 team. During the qualifiers for NIT, we played some of the best competition in region and just fell short, but it gave me the drive to continue and improve skills and tactics of the game. I decided to try out for New Heights U19 Regional Club Championship team for the spring tournament and was selected.
Field Hockey has provided me with not only a set of specific skills, but challenges my mental toughness in order to be successful. Because of this, I am looking forward to continuing to develop my skills, tactics and mental toughness and play at the highest levels of the sport.
