My goal is to attend a 4-year college that will allow me to explore my interests in the life sciences and will position me to pursue a career in Forensic Science. I come from a family with a strong medical and science background, which has fueled my interests. I am currently a junior taking Honors level classes. My GPA at the end of my sophomore year was 3.75.
As a student athlete, I’m looking for a college with a rigorous academic program that will challenge me as well as provide the opportunity to continue to play field hockey. I began playing field hockey in 4th grade with my local recreation association. As I continue to grow in the sport, I find that being a defender is my passion. I like to work closely with my goalkeeper and fellow teammates to not only function as one of the last lines of defense, but also to insure the ball gets to the mid-fielders to maximize scoring opportunities. Although I’m a defender I don’t hesitate to take advantage of my speed, an open field, and the opportunity to score. In my latest high school season I scored 3 goals with 2 assists.
In addition to playing field hockey, I’ve also trained in martial arts since 2nd grade. I trained in Taekwondo until the age of 13 earning my black belt. Since then I’ve been training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and I am currently a blue belt. I’ve medaled in local and regional tournaments, which has led to a local sponsorship. The discipline and mental toughness I’ve learned through martial arts has benefitted me on the field as well. At 4 feet-10 inches and 95 pounds, larger opponents seemingly outmatch me. However, I’ve learned through Jiu Jitsu that size doesn’t matter and my determination will dominate over size any day.
I’ve taken on leadership roles within both sports communities. This past winter season I volunteered my time to coach indoor field hockey for 4th and 5th graders in my local recreation league. Additionally, as a community service, my Jiu Jitsu coach and I co-teach anti-bullying and women’s self defense seminars. I find both of the experiences exceptionally fulfilling since I get to share my passion for field hockey and Jiu Jitsu with others.
I’m looking forward to my college experience being one of personal growth both academically and on the field.
