I was lucky to have been introduced to FH in 8th grade when my friend’s mom started a Rec club to help bring the sport to younger players in our county. The summer before my freshman year I attended a couple camps then tried out and made my high school team. After making varsity as a freshman, I knew this sport was something I really loved doing and had a commitment to. All my hard work paid off when I was chosen captain my junior year. Being captain was an important leadership role that taught me to always have a positive attitude when talking to the team even when the outcome of a game wasn’t what we wanted. When I started playing with my travel team, Potomac Rapids, I realized how amazing the FH community is, I love seeing and playing my friends on opposing teams and just knowing that I will be able to talk to them after the game no matter the outcome.
One of the most difficult things that I’ve had to overcome was learning how to deal with my learning disability. I have dyslexia, which resulted in me having to work twice as hard as most people in my grade. I have difficulty with standardized test, but I am an honor student member of the National Honor Society. Dyslexia taught me the importance of hard work and to not give up, that influenced many parts of my life. As a Girl Scout, for my Gold Award project I designed a program for Fauquier Community Child Care that brought Field Hockey to kids that would normally not be able to participate in the sport. I applied for and was awarded a Growing the Game grant from USA FH to fund the program. Bringing the sport that I love to these kids was very rewarding, at the end of my camp I had kids tell me they asked their parents to buy them their own stick and that they would continue to practice which meant everything to me.
