The window to make a first impression is narrow, so I want to thank you for taking time to visit my profile. It is hard for me to talk about myself because I firmly believe my actions speak louder than words, but I aim to highlight why I am a good fit for your program.
My name is Malosi Uhanekaiola Kam Siania. I am currently a Junior at Aquinas High School in San Bernardino, CA. I play both Offense and Defense, but my main positions are Guard and Center. As a student athlete, I want to continue playing football into the next level and earn a Bachelor's degree in Biomedical or Biomechanical Engineering. Although it might sound like an ambitious goal, I am confident in my abilities both in the classroom and on the field.
When I was younger, my parents enrolled me in different sports to see what sparked my interest. I participated in AYSO, Little League, and wrestling. At the age of 9, my football career began. From the beginning, I faced challenges ... I had to lose 25 pounds to be allowed to play in JAAF, I was placed on a team with kids who were 2 to 3 years older than me, and I was only given the mandatory "2 downs" of play time each game. It was discouraging and there were many times when I wanted to quit. At that time, I was fortunate to have a cousin that played football at UCLA. I witnessed the hard work and dedication he and his teammates put in at practice and games. Whether they won or lost, they all could say they did their best. They encouraged me to never give up and keep pressing forward. When I started to see the adversity as opportunities, I welcomed all with excitement and an open mind knowing that I have the ability to conquer and move on to the next lesson.
Over the years I have been blessed to have diverse experiences and influences that have helped me develop my personal pillars of faith, respect, courage, education, and service. In my Freshman year, I was chosen as a team captain for Junior Varsity. It challenged me to be an example of a student athlete and create a brotherhood with my teammates. Off the field, I am involved in my church and community organizations. At the Rock Church and World Outreach Center, I serve in the children's ministry for 2nd through 4th grade. I have the opportunity to help create a foundation of faith and lead by example of keeping God at the center. I am also a Rotary Life Scholar who is being mentored by local Rotarians about leadership, service, and networking. Last year, I had the chance to give back to Civitan Little League where I volunteered as a T-Ball manager. It led me to see through a coach's lens where I was responsible for teaching rules and mechanics of the game. But most importantly, I got to teach them sportsmanship and camaraderie. The league awarded me "Manager of the Year" for my service.
I'm not afraid to take correction and put in the work to fine-tune my shortcomings. I accept failure as part of the process. I always strive to be coachable and execute what I am asked to do. While some of my physical metrics may disqualify me as the most ideal candidate, I feel that my determination and mindset trumps the difference. I can guarantee that I will put my heart and soul in to the program, I just need a chance to prove it. Thank you for the opportunity.
