Personal Statement - Christian Miranda
My love of sports began from an early age. I inherited my dad’s love of soccer and I grew up spending much of my time on a soccer field. I started playing at age five and never stopped. Luckily, I had my dad to act as my coach and mentor. He was tough on me, but he ultimately taught me the importance of possessing the skills I needed to succeed on the field. I ended up playing competitively in many positions which included goalkeeper, striker, and defenseman. I truly thought that soccer would be my main sport until my coach told me that I should try out for kicker in high school because I had a “strong leg” and was skilled in placing the ball where it needed to go in order to score. Covid 19 ended up putting part of my spring soccer season on pause. I was going from 8th to 9th grade and starting at a new high school where I did not know anyone. I decided to join the football team to make friends and be part of the school community. I immediately told my coaches that I wanted to try for the position of kicker. I learned that kicking a soccer ball was very different from kicking a football, but with practice and determination, I learned that the power I have to kick a ball in soccer translated to football. I learned that there is a strong community of kickers. I connected with Chris Sailor, a well known organization that works with kickers and began taking lessons and working hard to develop my skills. Currently, I am the varsity kicker for my high school football team. It has been an interesting journey starting with soccer and now being a kicker, but it has been the most awesome experience. I still love soccer and I continue to play that as well. I was the captain on my team last year which was an honor because it showed me that my coaches and teammates recognize my leadership skills.
I am constantly working to improve my skills through training with my football team, weight lifting, and taking lessons from professionals in the kicking field. My goal is always to push myself so that I can compete at the highest level. Part of what pushes me to be the best is my family. I come from a long line of veterans, young and old, who have served our country in the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines (my dad). My family has shown me what it means to serve with purpose and the true meaning of sacrifice. I try to take what they have taught me and apply it to my goals on and off the field. I strive to lead by example while also encouraging my teammates. I am very coachable and I have a strong work ethic. I have worked hard to develop my reputation as a skilled player, but also a great person because character matters both on and off the field. I work hard on my studies and helping out in my community. I want to attend a college where I can push myself in the classroom and on the football field. I am open to all options. My goal is to find the right college match at the highest level of competition possible. It would be a dream to do what I love and continue playing football as a kicker in college, which would be the opportunity of a lifetime.
