"Ability is what you’re capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it.” Lou Holtz
My name is Luke Smith and I will be in the graduating class of 2024. For as long as I can remember, I have loved the game of football. I began playing flag football in 3rd grade and quickly decided I wanted to put on pads and play tackle the next year. I was always bigger than everyone else my age so early on my Jr. Pee Wee coaches put me on the offensive line. Although I knew in my heart that I wanted to play quarterback, I played where my coaches needed me and always gave my best effort. Outside of practice, I trained on my own as a QB. Andrew Luck and Tom Brady were the 2 QBs who I admired most. I was especially inspired by Tom Brady because there were many times in his life where he was underestimated and had pushed through adversity to get where he got. He spent a lot of time as a back-up, but when the opportunity came, he made sure he was always ready. I knew one day my time would come too, and when it did, I wanted to be ready.
My time finally came in middle school and I have played the quarterback position ever since. There are so many things I love about the QB position. I obviously love to throw a pretty spiral. There is nothing like the feeling you get when you throw that perfect pass, and you watch it fly through the air land in your teammates’ hands. I also love the opportunity to lead my team. As a QB, I have to communicate with, listen to, and encourage my teammates continuously on and off the field. I also have a special relationship with my coaches at the QB position, they trust me and they listen to me when I have ideas about plays and strategies.
I have been blessed to have many great influences in my life. My parents have always been my greatest sources of support. They have taught me that no one is entitled to anything in this life. That God may bless you with some amazing gifts like size and strength, but it is up to you to put in the work and use what God gave you to accomplish your goals. They have taught me to be grateful, to be humble, and to realize that learning never ends. No matter how much you think you know, or how good you get at something, there is always something new to learn or a way to be better. In other words, always be coachable and be open to constructive feedback. Lastly they have taught me that life is not all about me, that we are always a part of something greater than ourselves. In football this relates to the team. A team is a sum of its parts, it is not about “I” it is about “us”.
While I am passionate about my performance on the football field, I am also committed to doing my best in the classroom as well. I have a weighted GPA of 4.0 and I work hard to balance school and football. I know that I cannot just be a leader on the field, I also need to be a leader and positive influence on my peers in the classroom as well. My goal is to graduate summa cum laude from high school with honors and to attend a great college where I can both play football and pursue a degree in business. I want to attend a college where the academics are just as impressive as the football team’s record.
I am confident that I will be a great addition to someone’s college football program. I have the ability, the passion, the discipline, and the commitment to contribute to a football team’s success as well as the ability to excel in the college classroom. I am so excited about the future and look forward to earning the opportunity to play for a great football program while receiving an excellent college education.
