1/28/2016 Wow. Arion and I had a fantastic visit at Notre Dame yesterday. They offered him a guaranteed roster spot at ND. He and I are very excited about that. Then on the way out of the visit Purdue direct messaged Arion and offered him a preferred walk-on spot at Purdue. It has been a very exciting 24 hours.
12/15/2015 Notre Dame coach emailed us today and said that they will strongly consider him for preferred walk on position too.
12/15/15. IU recruiting coach liked Arion's film. Told him they will discuss preferred walk-ons in January and told Arion to get back to him in a couple weeks.
12/14/15. Tonight Arion was accepted at Notre Dame. Not sure whether he could be a preferred walk-on there, but ecstatic he got in.
12/14/15. Things are heating up again for Arion. Arion, my wife and I had a great official visit at Butler last weekend. He really liked the staff; the facilities were very impressive - the weight room, locker room, training facilities and the student athlete academic room conveniently located by all the other facilities - were all very cool. Really like the players too. His host Luke was great. The coaches were great - some very spirited; the academic support staff looks very helpful and also conveniently located in the student athlete academic room. Butler has become a very exciting option. Butler has a lot of momentum with such great facilities and building a new business building and new student dorms soon. There part-time MBA jumped to #25 recently which is also exciting. Arion hopes to major both in pre-med but also in business. So, Butler is looking very good.
Had home visit with Drake with coach Cashmore and that was a lot of fun and informative. We have known coach Cashmore the longest of any of the recruiters. He is a great guy and we appreciate his candor. We like his approach to recruiting. Our official visit is Jan. 15-16 and/or 17. Excited to meet Drake’s team to get a sense of how Arion connects with them. Drake is also an exciting opportunity.
Arion just tonight spoke with a coach about a possible home visit with Johns Hopkins probably for Dec. 21. Arion is very excited to visit with a top 10 academic school! Arion tells me his recruiting coach for Johns Hopkins was an Indiana Mr. Football who then played at Hopkins which is impressive. Their coaches are taking Arion's application for a pre-read this afternoon or tomorrow, I think.
Arion had a great visit with Carnegie Mellon's coach last week. That put them on the map for us whereas before that visit Arion was not considering them. Arion was very impressed with the coach who was also a student and player there. Arion plans to finish that application tonight.
Brown's coach emailed last week and plans on a visit to my school this week. Arion is excited to see where he stands with Brown, but has not had much communication with them for a while until this email last week.
We have noticed that Columbia and Dartmouth have been looking at this NCSA profile in the last few days. That is exciting too, but deadlines for applications are getting close so we hope if they are interested they contact Arion soon.
Arion plans to finish applications to Stanford, Brown and Carnegie Mellon tonight. These deadlines are approaching fast. Arion is already accepted at Drake, Butler and IU. He has scholarship money at all three of those schools. Arion has already applied to Harvard, Yale, ND, and Northwestern.
That is all for now. Charles Shinaver
11/23/2015 Very Excited for Arion. Butler University offered him tonight. So Arion has three great choices now between Drake, Butler and Valpo.
He also spoke to Yale yesterday and Harvard emailed him. He is waiting to hear back from Brown. I am very excited for him as he has some great choices.
11/22/2015 Update. Arion's father. His season ended a couple weeks ago. Guerin ended with their best regular season record ever and beat Chatard during the regular season for the first time ever. Unfortunately, Chatard beat Guerin by 7 in the sectionals and next week Chatard will play for the state championship. Guerin and Brebeuf have gave Chatard their toughest games of the post season and Guerin is the only 3A team to beat Chatard this year.
Arion has already received offers from Drake & Valparaiso University. Butler University appears likely to make an offer. We have an official visit to Drake scheduled. Harvard and Yale appear close to offering official visits as Arion communicated with both today. University of Indianapolis continues to be very interested as is Hillsdale College who invited Arion to an official visit. Arion has been invited to several IU and Purdue games for recruiting visits this year. He was able to attend the IU vs. Michigan game and had a blast. Arion could really see himself playing at IU especially on the defensive side of the ball. Arion has just uploaded his SR/JR defensive highlights and his final SR highlights. He has started 3 years varsity at WR and 2 years at CB. Arion has begun to believe that CB may be his best position in college. If you watch his SR/JR defensive highlights I think you will see why. Recruiting is heating up and getting exciting as things go down to the wire. We will be in touch with Patriot league teams this week as we have lost track of them.
10/8/2015 Update. This is Arion's father. He has been starting both ways and playing exceptionally well at CB. He is interested in playing either WR or CB in college. Please review his profile with that in mind.
6/24/2015 Update. Uploaded unofficial transcript through Junior year (IB) 3.8667 unweighted, 4.20 weighted.
6/23/2015 Update. Charles Shinaver (father) still writing for Arion. Arion got his ACT results today. His new composite score is a 32. This places him at the 98th percentile overall. He tells me his "superscored" composite ACT is a 33. (I didn't check the math.) We leave for Brown, Yale and Harvard camps tomorrow through the weekend. Arion also finished team camp with Guerin and it went very well. However, the film is not yet on HUDL. Last year not all the team camp film ever made it onto HUDL. If it makes it online this year we will share it. Recruiting was hectic all through the end of May. Arion has reduced his list of schools substantially.
5/27/2015: Update. Still a very hectic time. Arion is still swamped with finals this week and catching up with recruiting calls and emails. The Ivy League, Patriot League and Pioneer League schools have expressed the most interest. A few BCS schools have now also expressed interest too. The goal is excellent academics and football. These schools fit these criteria. There are about 12 or 13 schools on the list. There will be no way to attend all the camps. There are just too many schools. Some coaches have said that they will follow Arion throughout his senior year to see if he is a good fit even if he cannot attend camp. We hope that holds true for others. Clearly this process is far from done.
Arion will be taking the ACT June 13.
5/13/2015: A lot is going on right now. Arion simply does not have time to keep updating this. So, I will. I am his father, Charles Shinaver. Arion was inducted into the National Honor Society tonight. It was a nice ceremony. This trimester with IB Chemistry, IB History and IB Math (I think this is the most difficult math class at Guerin) academics have been extremely demanding. These three classes are possibly the 3 most difficult classes at the school, but certainly this has been the most challenging trimester for Arion academically. He did say last week that he has A’s in all of his classes, so far.
Workouts: He is working out 5 days a week. Of those days 3 days a week are lifting with some running, a day focused upon speed, strength and agility training along with football endurance. The last day is focused upon route-running. For route-running, Arion works individually with a personal coach who played WR at the University of Louisville. On this day Arion works with guys who are WRs presently finishing up their college careers and with another young man who will be playing college football next year.
RECRUITING UPDATE: Arion has little time to focus upon recruiting as you may have guessed, but he is still fielding calls, texts, tweets or instant messages on most days from coaches. I read most of the mail. Recruiting has gotten extremely busy in the last few weeks with last week being the busiest so far. Many FCS D1AA schools with exceptional academic standards and traditions have contacted Arion in the last few weeks. Some of those schools have been in touch with him for over a year (especially in the Ivy League). The schools that have reached out to Arion so far include all of the Ivy League schools, a number from the Patriot league and now some from the Pioneer league. A few BCS D1A schools have also reached out including a big 10 school. One BCS team sent a coach to Arion's school that left camp info and a second sent a letter identifying Arion as a top prospect and inviting him to camp. The communication has included a number of schools identifying Arion as a "Top Priority Prospect" or a "Top Prospect". The communication has ranged from personal invites to many camps, personal cards, calls directly from coaches, texting, instant messaging and tweets as well email and "snail" mail from coaches. In fact it has gotten fairly overwhelming for Arion which is why I will update this personal statement going forward. Tonight, right now, he is studying for an exam in IB Chemistry and Math.
CAMPS: Many of these teams and coaches are personally inviting Arion to attend their school's camp. With the number of invites it will simply not be possible to attend all these camps. Presently Arion has registered for camp at Yale, Brown and Harvard. He also expects to attend Northwestern's camp and probably Purdue's camp. Otherwise he has not made any other commitments and he will have his high school’s team camp to attend also. He will have to be very selective about what other camps to attend so as not to exhaust him before the season.
Clarity with his GOALS: Last weekend Arion became much more animated and firm about a few things related to recruiting that are worth reiterating here. Certainly this is related to the intensity of contact he has received since April 15. He said the following: 1. My goal is to go to one of the best schools in the country. 2. I want to play at the highest level of football in the nation.
As interest has picked up Arion appears to have gotten more firm about what he is attempting to accomplish. The last thing he mentioned was that it is difficult to gauge "how interested a school really is" even with several personal letters, cards, texts, instant messaging and phone calls. He said "it would be nice if the coach could say on a scale from 1-10 how interested he actually is in me and how I rank among the recruits he is looking at for wide receiver.” So, going forward I expect him to start asking coaches these questions.
4/12/2015 I won top 10 in the state for the DECA competition for Indiana. My category was marketing management skills. It was kind of funny because I only realized that the date of the competition was right as we got home from my cousin's wedding. I had to go straight from the airport to the competition, but it all worked out well. I am excited for this week because I know that Division 1 coaches can call on this Wednesday 4/15/2015. I have received many emails from a number of division 1 schools, but I am curious to see if I will get a call on Wednesday. I know the period when coaches can call extends to the end of May, but it would be very exciting to get some calls on Wednesday.
4/7/2015 Found out I made a Scout watch list for 2016 athletes. See it here: http://hsindiana.scout.com/story/1499707-updated-class-of-2016-watch-list. My super scored SAT scores are: Math: 730 Reading: 600 Writing: 570. I think I will continue to improve as I have a couple more tests scheduled. I am excited about a number of prospect camp invites (including some handwritten cards from coaches) and calls from coaches that have started to come in. I am looking forward to April 15 to see which Division 1 coaches call. I have had interest from 7/8 Ivies, Patriot League schools, etc. The schools interested in me tend to be excellent academically and athletically. I am excited to see where this goes.
3/6/2015 Just got my 2nd trimester grades: 3.9334 for the tri. I scanned and uploaded it today. This gives me a 3.8584 cumulative (3.86). I was happy with that because this was a difficult trimester. IB junior year is tough. Next trimester will also be challenging. I am thinking I might run track this year. Junior days at Yale and Princeton went well (see events for more details). Since this is a very challenging trimester and my parents are pretty busy I am not sure I will make other junior days. I was also invited to junior days at Bucknell, Dartmouth, Cornell and University of Jamestown. Fordham, Cornell, Dartmouth, Princeton and Yale have all also invited me to their camps. We haven't set our camp schedule yet. We will probably do that in a few weeks. We may only make one trip out east, but I am not sure yet.
2/17/2105 I just got my ACT scores. I got a 30 composite score which is 95th percentile. In Math I got a 33 which is 98th percentile and in reading I got 32 which is 95th percentile. In Science I got a 27 which is 90th percentile and in English I got 27 which is 85th percentile. I am sure I can improve in English and Science and maybe a little in the other areas. I felt good about this as my first try at the test. Here is a link where you can see percentiles for ACT scores: http://www.actstudent.org/scores/norms1.html at least for 2012-2014 scores. It looks like they don't have that information for 2015, but it is probably similar.
2/2/2015 Update. Our season went very well. We won sectionals. I made all-county as a WR. I also started at CB. This is my second year as a varsity starter at WR which will make me a 3 year starter at WR next year. I also expect to start at CB next year. I was honored by the fact that my teammates elected me as one of our captains for next year, my senior year. This year I had 33 catches for 445 yards which put me at 13.5 yards a catch. I had 3 receiving TD's. On defense I had 4 interceptions with one that was a pick 6. That play was my favorite of the whole season.
I continue to do very well at school where I have a cumulative GPA of 3.8477. I take the most challenging curriculum with our international baccalaureate (IB) program. Our school does not offer AP classes. Also, our school is one of the top 50 Catholic schools in the country. My goal is to play division 1 football at one of the best academic institutions in the country. After that I want to go to medical school. I am making progress toward accomplishing my goals.

2/26/2014 update. I was selected for the 7 v 7 team called "Greatness" from Indianapolis. We had our first practice last Sunday. It was a good workout. One on one drills are both challenging and fun. I am excited to get our season started.
Nov. 17, 2013 update.
We just finished our season last Friday. We won sectionals. In the regional game we lost. I was excited to be playing varsity football as a starter and contributor. In the sectional championship we were down 20-17 with a little over 2 minutes to play so we went into our 2 minute offense. I was able to catch two passes in the final drive to keep the chains moving. One catch was for 33 yards and the other was on 3rd and long for 10 yards. We scored a TD on the next play with about 30 seconds left. It was a blast. We held them and went on to win. We were the underdogs in each of our 3 sectional games that we won.
Academically, I continue to do well with trimester GPA of 3.86 and my cumulative GPA is also 3.86. My updated transcript has been posted. I take all International baccalaureate classes. Again this trimester I made Guerin Honors which is the highest academic honor our school gives for trimester grades. So, things are going well, but busy as usual. Tomorrow I am getting ready for basketball tryouts!
I will be posting my varsity video as soon as the final game video is released.

April 1, 2013 update.
I was selected to play on the "E7" elite 7 on 7 team for Indiana. I attended a showcase a few weeks ago in Ohio and we played against "Core6" from Chicago. The team is almost all upperclassmen (mostly juniors who were standout players). All players have to be invited to play on this team. Some of these players have already been offered scholarships. I am honored to be the only freshman wide receiver on the team. I think there is one other freshman on the team who is a QB. There may be one more freshman. I am not sure. Anyway, it is a great challenge as I get to go against some of the best defensive backs in the state who are juniors. I am learning a lot. Our next tournament is in Chicago on April 14.
I am doing lots of training now. I attend IU sports performance for speed and agilities training. I go to Sparta for wide receiver route running and skills development. Our team does weight training 3 days a week. I've gained 10-12 lbs so far.
School is going really well. I love Guerin and I am doing great with my grades. My cumulative is 3.9334. I have been on Guerin Honors both of my first two trimesters. I was also one of a very limited number of students selected to take Trignometry next year.
So, things are going pretty well.
Arion.
(See below for my highlight videos)

I also have a couple other quick academic notes. See my Academic information for my final grades in 8th grade. My average final grade in 8th grade was a 97%. My STS High School Placement test pdf is under my 2nd academic transcript. I scored at the 99-9 National percentile for Quantitative (782) & Mathematics (799). In Verbal I scored at 96-9 national percentile (688). My composite score was 96-9 national percentile (674). You can see my other scores on that transcript. For my scores on this entrance exam I was awarded a $1500 annual scholarship to Guerin Catholic High school.
My dream is to go to one of the best academic schools in the country and play football. If you see this profile and you are at such a school and you think I would be a good fit, I'd love to hear from you.
Thanks for looking at my profile!
