“My favorite sport is football and that’s all I think about 24/7! I hope to play in college someday and be on the defensive line team to fight in the trenches and get dirty” This quote came from a letter I wrote to a senior when I was in 6th grade as a school project. I started attending Iowa State football games at a young age and immediately loved the game. I played flag football until I was old enough to join the tackle football league and have been playing football every year. One of my youth football coaches encouraged me to join the wrestling club saying it will make me a better football player so I joined the wrestling club and continue to do that as well. When I was in 7th grade I added cross fit training to my schedule and the power phase came that summer. This summer I plan on adding football camps into by schedule. I have done all this with the end goal of playing collegiate football.
Last year I started on the freshman team as full back but was soon moved to offensive line because I was able to be one of the only kids to be successful at that position. Once that happened, our team began winning some games. I am respected by my teammates because they know that I do the extra it takes to be a better football player. I am excited to put on my football shoes and work on skills outside of practices. I also spend extra time in the wrestling room to improve my skills with that as well. I have been a 4 year state qualifier for AAU youth wrestling. I have also found that I enjoy participating in weightlifting competitions. Last year I participated in the Iowa State Fair Deadlift and Bench Press Competition. I received first place in my age/weight bracket for deadlift and 2nd place for bench press.
I am well aware and have been raised to know that school/academics are just as important if not more important than the sports I am playing. I was awarded the Goeppinger Award last year for academics. This award is given to students that maintain a 3.5 GP A or higher throughout middle school. My current GPA is a 3.4. I monitor my grades routinely and ask for assistance from my teachers when needed. My parents have taught me that school work comes first, and they continue to support and guide me with my education. It is important to me to be able to attend college and earn a degree as well as playing football. I am also participating in my school’s silver cord program. This program is teaching me that it is important to give back to the community. My goal is to finish this program by providing 40 hours of volunteer service each year while in high school.
