Currently, I plan on pursuing a degree in either business management or marketing, possibly with the long-term pursuit of a masters in environmental business management. High school has been an exploration of core curriculum and agricultural science. I love the outdoors and hope that my degree will allow me to have flexibility in job choices regarding the sustainability of the environment.
Although I come from a small school, do not overlook my talent. I have been actively involved and successful in many sports all my life, but I feel most passionate about football. There is nothing like breaking away from the pack and running the length of the football field to score a touchdown; I love making that cut to out-maneuver the opponent. I am a solid punter, making first team all-league in the SCAA both my sophomore and junior years. I have also played as a defensive back, and am confident anticipating plays to make the tackle. I have played many positions (running back, wide receiver, punter, defensive back, and backup quarterback), which has helped me to understand the game from several perspectives. I feel like my strength is in reading the field and outsmarting the defense to make it to the end zone. My experience as a sprinter in track this year has helped me get faster. I had a state qualifying time of 11.48 in the 100M dash, and made the St. Joe County All-Star team in the 100M dash and long jump.
I want to be part of a football program that feels like family; committed, with values and a strong work ethic. I believe no matter what the outcome of a game, I can learn from that experience. I try to remain positive and learn from mistakes on the field by always getting back up and doing it correctly the next time. I have always been an A/B student and I will have a successful career by putting the same effort that I use on the field into my academic studies. I foresee college life as a job, not a party, and hope to complete my bachelors degree in four years. I was inducted into the National Honor Society as a junior and have enjoyed the community service activities in which we have taken part (Youth for Family Christmas Wrap and various fundraisers for local causes). I look forward to more of those opportunities through the football program and college in general as well.
I recently attended the Notre Dame position camp (June 2014) and this has reinforced my motivation for pursuing a football career in college. I learned how to fine-tune my skills as a running back, and met and worked with some awesome college coaches who pushed me both physically and mentally. I know that I can be a benefit to any level football program, as well as the college academic programs if given the chance.
Sincerely, Chantz Owens
