Dear Sir/Madam;
My name is Alex Furphy, nickname is "Furph." I have resided in Cinnaminson my entire life. I played sports since age 4, soccer, baseball, basketball, and now football.
I started playing football at age 8 as part of the 90 pound team. I took a hiatus from it after playing only one year as I grew interest in basketball more. I started playing basketball in 5th grade, in town, travel, and eventually AAU through 9th grade. As a member of the travel team, we won two Division championships, it was amazing. My AAU league was equally as competitive, my coach always pushed us to be the best we can be and we won many tournaments as a result. That AAU coach later became my personal trainer for about 2 years and helped me develop into a strong athletic man. I believe I matured emotionally as well.
I joined the Freshman football team as I entered high school, I earned a starting position on the line. We had an amazing season and our record was 9-0. Our team was so cohesive and we all supported each other, our head coach knew we were going to gel well as we grew together. I played JV sophomore year and made a personal goal with myself to make the Varsity team for junior year.
I worked out hard all summer with a personal trainer, football trainer, and my friends at the gym. As a result, I earned a starter spot on the Varsity team for junior year. I was ready but during the 3rd game of the 2017-2018 season, I tore my Labrum muscle in my left shoulder, I was devastated and my entire Junior year season was over. I had surgery in November, 2017, my Rothman surgeon told me that if I worked hard I would be stronger than I was previous for my senior year, it was a goal that I knew I had to achieve. Post surgery I completed 4 months of PT and 3 months of light than hard work outs before being fully cleared in July, 2018 to play Varsity football. I earned a starter spot as an Offensive Right Tackle, I also sub as a Defensive Tackle for some plays. I work hard every day I step onto that field and I am physically and emotionally stronger than ever.
I believe I have tremendous character as I was able to overcome much adversity in my personal life as well as my professional life. In 2012 and 2015 I lost my grandmother and grandfather, the two individuals that helped raise me as a child. I was so sad as they were such an important part of my life. They came to all of my sporting events and supported me so it was very difficult to not see them there. My injury was also a difficult time in my life, it caused me to gain 30 pounds and really re-think my abilities but I refused to give up. I worked hard for 8 months to lose the weight and gain my strength back, that is a part of my character and commitment to the game. I consider myself a power house on the field, my Hudl will show you some of my skills and capabilities. I truly love football and I am looking forward to playing in college.
As a player, I believe in teamwork and hard work. I celebrate all successes with everyone whether big or small. If you ask my coaches, I think they will tell you that I work hard, give 100 percent and support every player on the team. I am also a leader on the field and treat everyone with dignity, respect, and kindness.
I do believe I need to put a little more work onto my academics, I realize that now and I am working hard to finish the senior year with high grades and a hopefully high SAT score.
I look forward to meeting you to discuss potential opportunities on your team.
Sincerely, Alex Furphy
