Football - To some people that is just a word that brings thoughts of a bunch of guys hitting and tackling each other in an effort to move a ball down the field across the goal line to score. To me, football is so much more ! My connection with football began in 2nd grade, when my parents signed me up to play flag football. I remember running around grabbing flags and playing with my friends. I look back at the pictures from those early years and still feel the joy and happiness that comes from playing with my teammates on the field. Next came tackle football. I was so excited that Thursday afternoon when we received pads and a helmet. I was finally allowed to hit kids without getting into trouble. I exceeded the weight limit to play running back and receiver - so that made me a lineman. Some of the kids who were in the same situation as I were sad, but I was ecstatic. I was to become a tackle on offense and a defensive end on defense. Flash forward eight years as a junior in high school, I finished the year as a tackle or tight end on offense and a defensive end on defense.
Football is so much more than a game to me. I love every aspect of football. I enjoy the weight room during the off season, the hot summer mornings conditioning, the locker room with my teammates, and then the GAME. It’s hard to put into words the love I have for contact; Hitting a runner and bringing them down, or my favorite sacking the quarterback and watching them crumble on the turf. I even love the achy feeling after the game, that soreness that comes from giving everything I had for the love of the game.
I work as hard in the classroom as I do on the field. My academic scores are something I am very proud of. I enjoy Science above all other subjects. I give credit to my teachers for making school a place where learning is attainable and enjoyable. I Am thankful I have a wonderful support group at my high school which helps me attain my goals.
I also enjoy track and field. I participate in throwing the shot put and the discus. I made it all the way to state as a sophomore in high school in the shot put. I earned 8th place and was the youngest contestant on the podium.
I believe my dedication to football throughout the years has prepared me to succeed in this sport at this level. I also feel that football is a big part of who I am today and who I plan to be in the future, both on and off the field.
