Personal Statement

Now that I'm in my senior year, I look back and see that everything I've done in my life has lead me to football.   I think about it every day.  When I lift weights all year long, I focus on getting bigger and stronger for my next season.  When Springtime comes, I run track and throw the shot put with the end goal of becoming faster and more focused for my next season.  When I meet off season with a trainer outside of school, I focus on speed and agility for my next season.   When I am overwhelmed with assignments in school, I push through them knowing I need good grades to continue playing football.

As a young kid, I didn't enjoy school much, because I didn't do well.  I've had an IEP since the third grade, and knowing I could play football helped me stay focused and on track.  It pushed me to eventually become an honor student and a team player.  My teammates are my brothers,  and we have each others' backs.

This sport has helped shape me into the man I am today.  I have a strong work ethic, a loyalty both on and off the field, determination and heart.  I will work hard to be able to do what I love, and that's a promise.

Awards and Activities

  • AwardsTo Whom It May Concern: I am writing this letter of recommendation for Jerry Coia. I had the pleasure of coaching Jerry in football at Penncrest High School during his junior and senior years. Jerry was our starting center during both of these years, as well as starting at nose guard as a senior. I have also known Jerry since he was an elementary school student, as I have been involved with Media Little League, ultimately serving as president. The growth I have seen in Jerry as a student athlete over these past two years has been the most impressive thing about him. Jerry was a relatively quiet sophomore, who was in the weight room but not a vocal presence. As his physical strength grew so did Jerry’s presence in the weightroom as a driving force for our program. A max squat attempt by Jerry was must see viewing for the team. EVERY member of our team rallied around for these attempts, and it drove them all to raise their own level of preparation. As the years progressed Jerry becam
  • ActivitiesTo whom it may concern, It is with great honor that I have the opportunity to write a letter of recommendation for Jerry Coia. Jerry exemplifies all the characteristics it takes to succeed in your program. On top of being a very good athlete on the field, he is an even better person off the field. In our program, we pride ourselves on training young men in more than just football but instilling in them life qualities that they will use long past their playing careers. Our program is being built on selflessness, controlling what you can control, accountability, hard work, and refusing to be the victim. I can’t think of a better example of those qualities than Jerry Coia. As the primary strength coach for the Penncrest football team, I have the advantage of getting to see our athletes more than any other coach on our staff. Daily, I get to work with them and bond with them in a way that no other coach can. Right away, Jerry and I clicked from the jump in the weight room because of his determination, hard work, and his relentless pursuit to get better. Off the field, and between our 3 biggest compound lifts (squat, bench press, deadlift), Jerry accounted for 1,110 pounds combined. That number surpassed the rest of our athletes and then some. I watched him grow to that number through all the intangibles he holds. On the field, Jerry was our starting center on the offensive side of the football and got a plethora of snaps at nose guard on the defensive side of the football. Being the center of our football team comes with a great deal of responsibility as you must not only be a strong interior lineman physically, but also a strong leader in the huddle mentally. Jerry, without a doubt, starred in both positions. He is a young man that his peers naturally gravitate to and love to play for. It is without any sense of hesitation that I strongly recommend Jerry Coia for any college of his choosing. He not only will be an asset on the field but will be much more valuable off the field. Feel free to reach out and contact me any time so I can elaborate on how great of a candidate Jerry Coia is for your college. Sincerely, Matthew Burba Matthew Burba Assistant Football Coach/Life Skills Primary Care Assistant Penncrest Football 610-212-7852 [email protected]
