Personal Statement

My name is Kai Sutherland. I was born on July 28th, 1992, at Fort Benning Georgia. I am 6.2ft and weigh 300lbs. My current bench max is 315lbs but my goal is to hit 330lbs by the beginning of the season. In May I was invited to participate in the NIKE Football Training Camp at Blacksburg, Va. It was a great experience. I also participated in the National Underclassman Combine at Bethel High School in Hampton, Virginia. After that event, I was invited to participate in the Ultimate 100 camp in New Jersey. I received an invitation to USC's football camp, although couldn't attend due to school. Rivals.com sent me an invitation to participate in their event called "Football Unversity" in Birmingham, AL. I lived in Georgia for 2 years and then moved to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. As you may have guessed, my dad was in the army. He served 24 in the infantry years including a tour in Korea and two tours in the Gulf. We came to Virginia in 2004 when my dad was stationed there. He's retired now and works for the Department of Defense. I began playing football in 8th grade. I started as both an offensive tackle and a defensive tackle. I hadn't been interested in football but my dad encouraged me to try out. He told me I had the size to succeed and that it would teach me character and discipline. I learned to love football during my first game when I sacked the quarterback as a defensive tackle. My teammates congratulated me and the fans cheered for me. During my sophomore year, I was pulled up to varsity to become one of only two sophomore starters. By this time I became focused on playing on the offensive line. I had played offensive tackle and guard. During my junior year I became the starting center and have played there ever since. I will play center during my senior year and hope to develop the skills to be the long snapper as well. While football remains my primary passion, I enjoy acting as a hobby. I have performed on stage at the Little Theater of Norfolk for which I received a very positive review in a local newspaper. I also had a bit part in a local film project. My favorite subject in school is history and I enjoy politics. I am a team leader who brings a positive attitude to the game. I am enthusiastic and I encourage the underclassmen; I don??t believe in hazing the rookies. I won an academic achievement award both my sophmore and junior years of football. I was also invited to the Spring Game at Duke and Virginia Tech this past summer. It is my dream to play college football and, if possible, professional football. I will play anywhere I am invited and would be thrilled to play football for any school that is interested in having me. I hope to play for Division I or II but would gladly play for any good school that is interested. My desire is to major in history and minor in political science. If football ends for me after college, I will go into teaching or politics. In college, I hope to play two or three of my four years. I do not want to sit on the bench through my college years, particularly if they are my last as a football player. I hope to achieve the dream of receiving a full-ride scholarship offer from D2s and D1s.
