Coaches have told me many times, I am one of the most coachable student-athletes they have coached. In addition, I am a quick learner, and I have a solid understanding (obsession) of the game. I came into my freshman year as a subpar athlete/leader, but in the past 3 years, I have become a force to be reckoned with and Captain of our varsity team.
I have overcome challenges in my life with the passing of my dad at the age of 14. Being the oldest, and the big brother of a sibling with cerebral palsy, I have stepped up as a leader and role model for my siblings and helped my family in many ways. Through this, I have developed in character including integrity, focus, compassion, discipline, mental strength, and a drive to excel day in and day out academically, athletically, etc.
I have been a leader by example since I entered the program, but recently coaches have provided the opportunity for me to choose to become a true and vocal leader improving my skills and leadership ability. I have taken the primary role in holding teammates accountable in practice and delegating others to also hold others accountable in all areas (practice, offseason workouts, team bonding, academics, etc.). I can relate to my teammates who are struggling in their personal lives, and they respect my own situation which allows me to have a positive influence on them at the same time as encouraging them to do better on and off the field.
The staff in the high school program from the AD to the position coaches think highly of me due to my unrelenting work ethic, reliability, and coachability. I have even been called "The poster child for the weight room" many times by the athletic director because he witnessed my transformation as a freshman to the athlete I am now. The staff recognizes my dedication and stability as a player/student. I never give up, and even played the majority of my junior season with a torn hip flexor because of a shortage of substitutes, and the team needed me to perform every Friday.
