My name is Marcus McCutchen and I live in Merced, California. I am currently a junior attending El Capitan High School. I come from a basketball loving family. The biggest influences in my life are my parents. My dad because of his battle with cancer and even though not always feeling well he still manages to find the strength to get up and go to work each day. My mom also inspires me because she makes sure that our home is taken care of and that my brother and sister stay on track for school. She also assures we make practices and games with no excuses.
My passion for the game started around the second grade. I started out playing Upward basketball and from there played in the parks and recreation programs. I also played in middle school and I’ve had the opportunity to play on several AAU travel teams. I feel this helped me get the experience and develop my skills to play in high school. When I entered high school as a freshman I made the Junior Varsity team. I made the varsity team my sophomore year and am currently playing my second year with the varsity.
Because of my love for the game of basketball, I have learned that basketball is a privilege and my education will always come first. My goal is to make every effort to do my best in high school academically so I won’t be limited in my college selection based on my grades and test scores. My hope and plans for the future are to excel both academically and as a player to reach my goal of achieving the best education I can in college.
If I had to say one thing about myself I would have to say that I am a versatile person that is able to adapt to new situations. Life’s complexity has been the biggest obstacle that I have to overcome; no one said it had to be neither fair nor easy. When at times that I feel like I have no more to offer I can always push to find that little more to give.
Obstacles don't have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.
