Personal Statement

CONNOR’S PERSONAL STATEMENT

My name is Connor Lanz and I'm a senior captain at Bear Creek High School in Stockton, California. I play basketball as a combo shooting and point guard at Bear Creek High School as well as with my Stockton Panthers 17U AAU basketball team out of Stockton, CA.  During my first game senior year at Bear Creek, I made 7/12 three pointers, breaking the school record of 166. I currently have 169 three pointers for my career.  During my 2018-19 campaign, my team played in the Mark Gallo Central Catholic Invitational and I was a first team all-tourney selection. During the 4 tournament games, I averaged 23.5 points per game and made 10, 4, 5, and 7 three pointers,  setting a tourney record with 26 total three pointers. My sophomore season I started over a 2 year senior starter, averaged 10.2 points per game, and helped guide my team while making 65 three pointers, setting a school sophomore starting shooting guard record. Since our 2018-19 season ended, I have the single season 3 point record, in the history of the Bear Creek High School, netting 97 three pointers, 162 total 3 pointers in my 2 years at varsity. After the 2018-19 season, the coaches voted me 2nd team all-league. I improved in each category possible averaging 14.9 points per game, 2.3 rebounds, 1.5 assists per game, a 75% free throw percentage, and 45% from 2 point range. During the Reno 2019 Memorial AAU basketball tournament,  I averaged 19 points with scores of 27, 15, 15, 23, and 15. I was voted the MVP on my 2019 AAU basketball team. During the Stanislaus State Basketball Tournament, I averaged 24.5 points per game with 21, 25, 25, and 27 points going 3-1. The confidence I have is what it takes to help your basketball program continue its winning tradition. I've been playing basketball since I was 4 years old and I enjoy lifting weights and pushing my body to the extreme. For instance, I lift weights 4 to 5 days a week, shoot for an hour daily, and workout with a trainer who is the starting point guard of Team Trouble in Stockton, CA. Wanting to play college basketball while earning my Bachelor of Science degree in land surveying/civil engineering are my collegiate goals. I won a land surveying trig-star contest my junior year. My current 3.71 GPA ranks me at 75 out of 521 in my senior class. I have had a successful high school career to date and intend on furthering my high school experiences in a positive direction and throughout my lifetime.

  • ActivitiesVolunteers my time at Presentation Church for the past 6 years as a 1st grade religious ed classroom helper. I attended a Youth Advocacy/Solidarity Summit @ University of the Pacific on Saturday, Sept. 8th. The summit helps me with my leadership skills. The Youth Advocacy & Solidarity Summit introduces issues of social justice to young people in Stockton with a focus on the Southeast Asian community. There will be workshops on race, ethnicity, and immigration issues.  On September 15, 2018 I attended a "Stockton Rising Youth Conference." Teenagers talked about teen crimes, prison systems, and emotional health teenagers face in today's society and at home and how it affects teens in their daily lives. I also learned about the preferred gender LGBTQ pronouns to use. To clarify their gender identity, students can request that others refer to them with traditional pronouns (he, him, his or she, her, hers), pick from a number of hybrid options, such as ze, hir, hirs, or use the plural pronoun “they” to refer to an individual. I'm also involved in assist the boys basketball boosters by working the snackbar at the varsity football games. On October 4th of 2018, I traveled with my uncle to a Santa Clara elementary school land surveying site in Northern California. I was amazed by the development of the Santa Clara school district site I witnessed. In March of 2019, I won the Trig-Star contest in April. The Trig-Star NSPS is a sponsored high school math contest skill award. It is sponsored by the National Society of Professional Surveyors based on the practical application of trigonometry. On September 22, 2018 my family and I painted and cleaned Victory Park and Haggin Museum. We spruced up the garden by the ponds as well as at the main entrance. Ben Holt College Perparatory College Academy School, the middle school I attended before high school, was having a "homeless sleepover." This program was established by Mr. Chan, a Ben Holt teacher, to show thecepedemic of homelessness in my hometown, Stockton, CA. Students slept in cardboard boxes throughout the evening and into the morning. In early October I attended a campus tour of Chico State University, talked to an advisor and had a civil engineering building tour. In October of 2018, I watched a San Joaquin Delta College mens basketball practice. In early March 2019, I took a tour of the land surveying department at Santa Rosa Community College. Soon there after, I attended an open gym and played well. My senior year I tutor in AVID as well as during a session for 20 minutes Tuesday and Thursday.
