My name is John Parmeter Zapata and I am a 6 '8', 215 lb forward for the Pasadena City College Men’s Basketball team. I left North Tahoe High School in 2020 as the Northern Nevada 2A Defensive Player of the Year. I was recruited by Coach Ryan Frazer to join the Men’s Basketball team at MiraCosta Community College in Oceanside Ca. Then the pandemic hit. While we tried a few times to get a season started, it just didn't happen. Last year, as Covid protocols were put in place, I opted to redshirt so as to give me a better opportunity to build my skills and physical presence coming out of the lockdown. That is how today I am a 20 year old starting freshman.
Since leaving my hometown and using my time to stay in the weight room to gain muscle I have gone from a 195 pound frame to my current more filled out 215 pound figure that is used to play in the post and have a solid defensive presence. While I recognize I still have a ways to go I know I have the capability to get stronger and become more physical, as I work tirelessly in the weightroom to continue to build my strength.
Last year at MiraCosta, under the leadership of Coach Frazer, our team made it to the Elite Eight Community College Basketball Playoffs. While I was not a member of the active roster, I trained every day with my teammates, often running the offensive and defensive plays against them that helped them succeed on the court. I know what it takes to play on a championship team. When Coach Frazer had an opportunity this summer to move to Pasadena City College, myself and many of my teammates jumped at the opportunity to follow him.
I believe I am in a unique opportunity this year as a starting freshman. I have the chance to stay with Pasadena and play a sophomore year or if the right position were to come along, I could bring three more years of playing to an active roster. I know I am coachable. From winning the “Most Coachable” Award my freshman year in high school to working with Coach Frazer these last three years, I have seen my basketball skill and IQ improve each year.
Our season is just getting underway. I am excited to play for Coach Frazer and with my teammates who I have been training with for the last two years. I hope you will follow me and my team as we play hard to achieve another playoff slot this season
