Personal Statement
''A lot of leaders fail because they don’t have the bravery to touch that nerve or strike that chord.'' - Kobe Bryant. Linking into the fact that I would like to study the Sports Management course at university to learn more skills about being a coach and overall a leader. I study this because from an early age I have been interested in a various number of sports such as basketball, football, cricket and many more. What has interested me the most about BTEC sport is how specific the practical lessons are. This is where students such as myself may have to carry out a lesson or a key teaching point within a sport, for example basketball and teaching how to use the right technique to shoot the basketball. In addition to that I am the basketball captain of the academy at Greatfields school which means I have a great passion not only for studying sport but for playing basketball and many other sports.
While doing my studies I have done many things outside of it too that can relate heavily to studying sports management at university. I read the book 'Kobe Bryant Mamba Mentality' I like this book and reading sport related books as it has aided me in basketball heavily as it helps with my mindset more specifically this book goes through exactly how Kobe Bryant prepares himself for big situations, whether that be before a game or in general life situations. I have used his preparation techniques in many moments such as before a big test such as unit 1 or a big basketball game that I know I have to perform in.
While I’m fully committed to pursuing a professional basketball career, I recognise the importance of a strong academic foundation to support my future endeavours. I have done relevant work experience that has supported me in the decision to study sports management. My work experience was working as an assistant coach with a head basketball coach. This has taught me organisation skills which links into planning sessions. From my work experience, I learned how to provide more extrinsic motivation, which is driven by external factors. As a basketball coach, my approach to progress and rewards would evolve with the age and experience of the groups I work with. For younger players, rewards might include items like free t-shirts or shoes, while with young adults or adults, I would focus on offering career opportunities and personal development.
One of the key qualities I've developed throughout my life is independence, whether at home, in school, or on the basketball court. In every aspect, I've taken responsibility for my goals and ambitions, consistently managing my time and efforts to achieve what I want and need. This sense of responsibility has prepared me for pursuing a degree in sports management, where self-discipline and leadership are essential. Which I believe it ties in heavily with Sports management as I would not need a teacher or a lecturer constantly reminding me to do my work. This has also aided me as being the basketball captain of the academy as I am able to take the responsibility of the team, which can tie in with being a leader as I said earlier in my introduction for example if we lose a game I am able to help motivate the team to come back to training and get better as time goes on.
I believe that studying the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport has provided me with valuable experiences and skills that will support my future studies at university.
