Personal Statement
My name is Constantinos Papacostas. I am 19 years old from Cyprus and I consider myself to be a very responsible individual, hardworking and most of all passionate with basketball. Ever since I remember myself I always had a dream, and the dream was to play professional basketball. It’s time to fulfill my dream and I am planning to do so. Through my adolescence I played basketball and studied hard, mostly until really late at night due to lack of time because of my practices, so that I could manage to achieve high grades to become a great student in parallel to being a great athlete.
I have graduated from " The Grammar School, Nicosia" in June 2013, with academic and sport achievement honours, along with a General average mark of 93.6% (rank:32/141). Grammar School is a private English school, based on the British Educational System. I have thus successfully completed 13 years of study and finished my GCSE A-levels in the 7th grade. While I was in school I was a member of the Grammar school's basketball team, having many personal and team achievements.
Basketball in Cyprus is organized in athletic Clubs. Basketball started for me in the year 2003 when I joined the basketball development team of KERAVNOS B.C. for 6 years, and won two U14 championships. In 2009-2011, I played for the basketball club ETHA B.C. and managed to win the U18 championship and cup. Also we won 2 straight MEN's championships and one cup. In 2012-2014 I played for APOEL B.C and managed to win a championship with the MEN's Team. We also had a respectable season with the U18 team.
Today, with continued hard work I am achieving to play at the highest level of basketball in the Cyprus Basketball League, the Men’s Division 1, for the team of OMONOIA B.C.
Since July 2014, I am proudly serving my country’s Armed Forces (military service is compulsory in Cyprus for two years). My military service is expected to end by June 2016.
In 2011 I was selected by the Cyprus Basketball Federation (the official governing body for basketball in Cyprus) as the best U16 player of the year and in 2013 I was selected as the best U18 player of the year.
I am also a proud member of Cyprus Men’s National Basketball Teams (U16,U18,U20 and MEN's). Being a member of my country’s National Teams, I participated in 2010 FIBA EUROPE U16 European Championship (Andorra, Spain) in 2011 FIBA EUROPE U16 European Championship (Strumica, F.Y.R of Macedonia) and in 2014 FIBA EUROPE U20 European Championship (Saragevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina). Being a member of the national team gave me the opportunity to travel a lot and to compete, get to know athletes from all around the world, and having the chance to play for my country with the ultimate goal of taking it in the top of every European Championship or Tournament.
My primary goal is to play college basketball, to obtain my college degree in the field of computer science and to play professional basketball. I’m really looking forward to the personal athletic and academic challenges that studying to the U.S. will bring.
