Tyler Good – Personal statement:
Over the past 2 years I have developed a deep interest toward the subject of Criminology
and Criminal behaviour. I personally have grown an interest in the topic of ‘Why criminals
commit the crimes that they do’ and ‘How they are mentally different to a normal person of
the public’. By taking Criminology at A-Level and researching into a criminals mind and
thought patterns which are common in criminals in Psychology GCSE and A-Level my
interest and passion for Criminology has grown and I would love to go into a further
education where I can continue to learn about Criminology and fuel my passion. I have been
fixated on choosing Criminology for my further education for a long time now and came to
that decision after joining my college. The main reason I am personally drawn to the course
is its real life application and how it can improve peoples’ lives, by learning and developing
our knowledge on criminals and the factors that cause them to commit either minor or
major offences, then applying this knowledge to improve the level of rehabilitation we can
use on criminals to improve their chances of success once they are released. This can
especially be applied to the youth system as we can put in adequate levels of research into
the definitive factors that promote the deviant behaviour from a young age, and use this
knowledge to increase their chances of living a good standard of life when they are released.
Outside of my studies I play Basketball in my free time and I am the captain of my clubs U18
team and I play up a level for the Men’s Division 1 team, as well as playing for my colleges
1st team. I also was the top scorer for my college team last season and currently for this
season I am again the leading scorer. I have had a dedication to Basketball since I was 11
and have played it ever since I first picked it up. Throughout those years I have had dreams
of playing professionally overseas in either Europe or America and that still is my dream to
this day. To help me reach this goal I am always working hard, but this starts from me being
confident in my abilities and having a positive mindset no matter what. By being the captain
of my team I have developed leadership skills, decision making and communication skills
which can contribute to the course as group work and social skills are very important in any
work setting.
I am heavily interested in the power of a persons mind and how that can define who they
are and change their future. I try to apply this to my studies and sporting achievements as
much as I can. The use of meditation and yoga (I have found) is such a key aspect to bringing
a persons mind and body together helping them reduce stress and make them be more
productive in every day life. Another method of being more productive I personally find very
effective is manifestation and keeping a notebook which in the morning you add todays
goals and what you personally want to achieve whether it’s a small step toward a big goal or
a milestone, then at the end of the day marking off which ones you completed.
In terms of future career goals my dream is, as stated earlier, to play professional basketball
overseas and that will always be my Number 1 ambition. But I also would love to go into a
career of criminal psychology and studying the roots and reasons of a criminals deviance to
the rest of society. The mix of criminology and psychology in that career is my main reason
for wanting to go into that space of work, as I have studied psychology for 5 years now and
criminology for 2 years I now have an interest into why and how criminals commit certain
crimes and mainly the mental side of their motivation to commit crimes.
