Personal Statement
Dear Prospective Coach,
My name is Jayden Samarasekera and I am a 14 year old student studying at ICHK international school in Hong Kong. Growing up in Hong Kong has given me a unique opportunity to experience wonderful cultures, customs, try unusual foods and receive a diverse education. I am very open minded, curious and also like to rise up to a challenge.
The first year I started secondary school, I watched Lebron James come back from a 3 - 1 deficit in the NBA finals, and that’s when I became hooked on basketball and started to play. I’ve been playing for 2 years for my school team and also for HKBA in their Elite League. I have been selected to join HKBA’s travel team to compete in international basketball tournaments around Asia. I love the game and always give 100% when training and in competitions. I have strong ball handling skills, strong defence, read the game well and can drive hard. I always listen to my coaches and follow direction well.
In the past I have also participated in school and club soccer teams, been a member of the school swimming team and played touch and full contact rugby. Through my experience playing different sports, I have learned that I have leadership skills, know how to cooperate and communicate well with other people, how important it is to be a team player and to be a good sportsman at all times.
In the future I would like to attend a college where I can play basketball at the highest competition level possible. I’m also looking forward to independent learning, the many choices of electives that will be available to me and meeting lots of new people.
Thank you for taking the time to read my personal statement.
