Personal Statement
An inspiration for others
The road to get to where I am today has not been easy, however, I have managed to evolve in an incredible way thanks to the people around me, who have been a great help in my life, at all possible levels. Not only the work, dedication, effort and determination of these people, but also the personal commitment that I put into everything I do. I like to prepare myself to the highest level, even if I don't have the right tools, I always look for a way to get ahead, and achieve it no matter how difficult it may seem.
The Dominican Republic is my country which I love with all my soul, but it does not offer me the full resources to develop myself to the level I want, because the educational system does not offer the necessary support to help us to be better people and we have to seek for our own ways to survive and improve ourselves every day.
Studying in a public school is difficult, since the educational characteristics and facilities that exist in this area are not the best, but this has not prevented me from moving forward. Despite living in a non-English speaking country, it is very difficult to find people with a high level of English, and I believe that thanks to the dedication and hard work of my social environment and myself, I have been able to have the ability to speak English fluently and at a good level. In the pursuit of a better education and a better life, not only for myself, but also for my family, coming from a middle income household with a single mother, it is almost impossible, but this has taught me that life is not always easy, but that giving up is not an option, as my mother has always done, to get my family ahead on her own.
I have taken a series of workshops to improve my English level not only to be able to speak and think in English, but also to be able to compose in English any kind of documents; mails, essays, etc. The preparation before taking this workshops were not such a simple process either, there was an extremely strong preparation of writing, reading, interpretation and critical thought in English, to bring up my level in English to the highest index so that I can manage in daily life without any problems when using English for any personal needs with the previously acquired knowledge.
My skills as a leader have developed on a large scale and have the ability to create projects, coordinate them, and be in charge of. Proof of this is the project that I am in charge of together with my basketball coach, it is a way to create opportunities for children and young people to practice a sport and do not have the necessary resources to be part of institutions in the sporting world. We facilitate this for the young people and we also serve nationally. My coach and I are trying to go into the international phase, but we do not have the necessary help for this.
I yearn to be a great leader, especially in the Sports Management area, since I wish to help improve the surrounding atmosphere, doing entrepreneurial projects for low-income people, afro-descendants, people
that were raised by a single parent, their country of origin does not offer them the right tools to develop themselves, young people looking for opportunities to be someone in the future, etc.
I want to be an inspiration and a change for my country and the world, not only for my achievements, but also for my hard work and dedication, contributing with those people who have the same start as me, know that with the right people, effort, dedication and hard work, they can achieve all their goals. I feel that the universities in the United States offer me the resources and tools to accomplish my goals and make them come true, to prepare myself at the best possible level and make me a better person in the future, helping others to fulfill their dreams as well, providing that opportunity that I never had from the beginning for people to make the most out of these circumstances that arise.
