Personal Statement
I would like to introduce myself, I am Samuel Callahan, I live in Melbourne, Australia and I am a Class of 2017 (graduating highschool in 2016 but attending college 2017) student and looking to live my dream of being a Student Athlete playing a sport I love (basketball). I attend Mentone Grammar School in Melbourne and always work hard in class, earning an Academic Excellence award in year 8 and recieving consistently good results ever since. My favourite subject is Psychology. I aspire to recieve a degree in Physiology or Sports Science whilst having a life experience in a foreign country.
I like to think of myself as a humble person who possesses a unique desire for success through means of hardwork. Being the captain of a state level basketball team last year, the Oakleigh Warriors, and the captain of my Varsity School team this year, I believe I have the interpersonal skills to bring the best out in, not only myself, but my peers through my leadership and confidence in what I do. I definitely value defence above all else in basketball and my defense is my main asset as I am able to lock down quick guards with my explosive lateral movement. I also believe that the small aspects of the game, the one-percenters, such as diving on loose balls and boxing out defenders and playing proper help defense are what eventually add up and contribute to team success, each of which I pride myself on having. I am a very versatile player and can play different positions if needed by using my agility and basketball IQ which I have developed over the many years of playing at a high level. Apart from the Oakleigh Warriors U18 and School team, I also play for the Oakleigh Warriors Big V team as a point guard (senior state-level team), which is a league comprised of mostly 20-30 year olds.
I am not saying I will score 20 points per game (maybe 6-10) but I will definitely save 10 points per game on the defensive end whilst still contributing by finding open teammates for scores on the offensive end. If you have time you can view what I have to offer, I know it is a long process but I am willing to stick right through to the very end and do whatever it takes to achieve my dream of playing college basketball.
Thanks
Sam
