Personal Statement
Be better, a motto that has been a part of my life ever since I could remember. A phrase that has led me to accomplish more than I could have ever fathomed. In my eyes, to be better is to excel and exceed the previous you and achieve success nobody around you has. In short, it is to be greater than before.
Competition has always been a major part of my life with sports being the main source of it all. I have always been in love with playing sports, whether it be competitively or not, and the thought of being the best drives me and pushes me to do more and be more. It drives me to be the best I can with all I have.
Basketball and swimming stole my heart early on, and to this day I work and train with the dream of competing professionally at the highest level imaginable, but it has never been easy for me always being the shortest, fattest and slowest on the team. The opportunities to prove myself were rare despite the amount of time and effort I put into it all, I was simply not good enough. The thought of inadequacy resided in my mind for months cornering my self confidence leaving it to be basically non-existent, though I knew the only way to rid the feeling of inadequacy was to work two or three times harder than before to prove myself.
It became a habit. Waking up everyday to be better today than I was yesterday and the day before regardless of where it was. Betting on myself where others did not because I knew what I was capable of led to independence where possible to show I am sufficient as well as self confidence because I knew if given a chance I know I would and will be better because I am better. A Better teammate. Better dribbler. Better shooter. Better scorer. Better player. Better swimmer. Better form. Better focus. Better leader. A better. Through all the tough times and through all my triumphs, only one phrase stuck with me: Just Be Better.
