Personal Statement
Hello. My name is Jed Hedgecoe. I am fourteen, live in Cardiff, Wales and have been playing basketball since I was 7.
National Team: I have been in the Wales National Team for three seasons to date – U12 (2017/8); U14 (2018/19; 2019/20) – and have played in a number of tournaments including the Torrain Sears Memorial Tournament (Belfast, May 2018) and the Euro Youth tournament (Barcelona, July 2019).
Club Teams: I am currently (2020-21) the captain of the Bristol Flyers U14 team (Basketball England Premier South 2 League).
I started playing basketball at Cardiff Met Archers, where I played for 6 years (2014/15 to 2019/20) – normally playing up an age group – the high point being winning the South Wales cup in February 2020.
My dream has been to play basketball in America and eventually professionally since I was 8 and I truly love the game. I am an excellent scorer at all three levels, and am confident with the ball. I have great guard skills for my size and move well on and off the ball. I hustle for rebounds and use my size in the paint effectively. I train consistently every day to get stronger and faster, while also improving in all aspects of the game. Though I am still growing, I am continuing to build muscle onto my frame. In my only game this season (due to COVID-19) playing for Bristol Flyers as captain, I scored 20 points and shot 10/10 from the field.
Off the court I have several hobbies like music and play other sports like rugby (where I can fit them in around my commitment to basketball).
I excel academically as I’ve started several of my GCSE’s a year early and have chosen History, PE, Drama and media studies as my options along with my 11 compulsory subjects which I have all A’s in.
