Personal Statement
My name is Earvin Dizon, I am a “6”3” 200lb shooting guard. My academic goals for high school is to achieve an 85 ATAR in the HSC as well as achieve an SAT score of at least 1200 as an international student.
In college my goal is to major in business and learn as much as I can about the business world in the hopes of one day starting my own business. I strive towards an American college experience and keen to be a student athlete in college. I know life isn’t that easy as I've already overcome obstacles such as a stress fracture in my back which stopped me from playing for a year, before returning from the weights room. I have persevered even after being cut from multiple selection trials, only to achieve greater than those initial selections in the follow-up trial. Furthermore, I have received an award for most improved academically in high school. I have learnt patience, dedication, and have understood the true meaning of hard work in order to better myself and come back stronger.
For me, basketball runs in the family, I was introduced to it the day I was born, being named after Earvin Magic Johnson. I began to take Basketball seriously when I was in a small primary school in rural sydney, I reflected and realised I wanted to get myself out of there. In my final year of primary school I was recruited to one of Australia's most prestigious private schools on a scholarship. Basketball has taught me so much about myself in particular, leadership and being able to communicate different messages to different people. In life, I know what it’s like to be an underdog and have all odds against me and still succeed.I was also selected to be a prefect in my school and chose to specialise in disability awareness and encourage school spirit, I was further appointed peer support to ensure our freshman students transition well into their first year of school.
I have learnt to crave criticism, I enjoy getting feedback from coaches and try to understand how I can continuously improve. Ingame, I am a 3 way scorer, physical defender and leader on/ off the court, the game is slower in my eyes than most. I’m able to slow down and analyse the court even during a high paced elite level. As a freshman I played in Varsity as a backup SG as we had an undefeated season winning the all-conference championship. This was truly a great experience as I developed rapidly to compete with older boys as well learning key leadership skills from the seniors. My sophomore year, I was in the starting 5 for varsity and led the team in scoring and got MVP. Senior year, I led my team as captain, to an almost perfect season hence the end of my 4 year journey in varsity.
