Personal Statement
RED SHIRT Junior Ready to play in 2018......My name is Tyba Murphy I am from Australia and I am ready to have an impact in 2018. I red shirted as a Freshman at HPU (ranked #4 Nationally) in Hawaii in 2015 in the strong Pac West Conference and are now looking for an opportunity to have an impact and relocating. I have learnt so much and developed as a player and person during my time and achieved an overall 3.33 GPA and made Dean's List in 2nd semester with a 3.54GPA. My coaches from HPU will be more than happy to talk about my character, basketball skills, coachability and academic achievements, please contact Head Coach Vord, Coach Buhler and Head Assistant Coach Nak.
I transferred to Missouri Valley College (MVC) for 2016 and was set to have a significant role with the Vikes before a horrid run of injuries in the pre-season which included a fractured patella and resulted in a season ending operation including 12 months rehabilitation 5 days prior to the first game. I finished the year at MVC and made Dean's List in 2nd semester and have been back in Australia in 2017 to continue my re-hab to make me stronger for 2018. I am back in full training and are ready for College in Fall of 2018.
I will bring to my new College in the future a burning desire to succeed and know the dedication and commitment it takes having been involved in a successful program at HPU. I am prepared to play at any level and in any location.
I am wanting to be the best I can at my basketball and in life in general.
When I completed Year 12 I was on a General Excellence Scholarship at a Prestigious Boys School in Australia, so I understand the responsibilities and privileges of being on a scholarship and I am always striving to be my best. Whether it is in academics or sport or being a leader and role model. My school did not have a basketball program subsequently I played for what you would term a "Travelling Club" our competition runs for 9 months of the year. This is on top of study and school sporting competition, because I represented my school in 3 sports, this has helped me develop good time management skills which I believe are essential for a student athlete.
In 2014 to improve my Basketball I played Big V which is a State based men's competition rather than Under 20's. I wanted to play against men and in a different team role to have me ready for the physicality of College. It was a hard decision to make to leave my team mates and club of 5 years but I believe it was the right decision to keep developing my overall basketball skill sets.
In my Year 12 in Australia, I received great school results 4 x A's 1 x B and 1 x C, I was in the top 15% of the State and in 2 subjects the top 1% . I believe my latest tape shows basketball IQ, great court vision, defence as well as offence, directing plays and structure on the court, speed on offence and defence and still playing physical close to the ring (loving banging the boards). I have tried to show my complete game because I believe that is what sets me apart from many players in that I value the 1%’ers that I can bring to the team with my intensity and desire.
I am currently studying the sciences and I hope to undertake Sports Science or a Pre-Physiotherapy Degree at my new College. The opportunity a College education, playing a sport I love and life experience in a foreign country is a dream come true. I believe I am a team player that could help any team, I have received countless Coaches Awards for being the "Heart and Soul" of a team. I encourage every player within the Team to be the best they can be and that the team is only as strong as the weakest link. So I strive in every sport to make the team function to be the best it can be no matter the level of ability.
In Middle School I was Captain in 2 of my 3 Sports, Prefect, Class Captain and House Captain. My short term academic goals were to achieve over a 3.5 GPA and I achieved a 3.78GPA and in Year 12 be a School House Captain (which I was just elected for my Year 12 year).
At HPU I did hone my skills and improved at an incredible rate and adapted to the intensity of being a Student Athlete, training 4-5 hours a day 6 days a week on top of achieving in the classroom and cooking and cleaning. So I will bring to my new College desire and dedication to succeed. At MVC this season I was ready to play a key role with the Vikes until my 3rd injury before the season started. After my operation I have been working hard on rehab 2 x 1 hour sessions a day 5 days a week and will be ready to go by October/November. I did undertake extra subjects this semester to be ahead of my academic schedule and utilising my time doing 6 subjects this term and 31 units for the year. I will be the hardest worker on the court and in the classroom.
I hope my story peaks your interest for a tough defensive team player who is ready to impact in 2018.
