Personal Statement

Hello, my name is Nick Maddison and I have just started my Senior year at Albia Community High School in Albia, Iowa.  This past high school basketball season I was the starting point guard for the Albia Blue Demons.  This last summer (2017) I was the starting point guard for two traveling AAU basketball teams based in Central and Southern Iowa.  One of those teams was the Southern Iowa Thunder, based out of Ottumwa, Iowa and the other team was the Iowa Battlers, a club team based out of Des Moines, Iowa.

I have been playing organized basketball since I was in the 1st grade.  When I began playing as a young kid, I realized how much I loved basketball.  My parents could see how much I enjoyed playing and have always been very supportive of my basketball life.  I have been playing on a tournament team called the Southern Iowa Thunder since 6th grade.  The Southern Iowa Thunder has played in numerous tournaments in Iowa and surrounding states.  I have also played for the Kingdom Hoops basketball organization ran by Jake Sullivan (www.kingdomhoops.com) and the Iowa Elite basketball organization ran by Larry Mason (www.iowaelite.com).

My dream is to play basketball in college.  No one in my family has had the opportunity to play sports in college and I want to achieve that for myself.   I also want to use basketball to help me get a great education.  I believe I can be a valuable asset to any college basketball program.

Thank you!

Nick Maddison

Events

  • Camp/Event
  • Queens University Elite Camp
  • 6/04/17 to 6/04/17
  • Was invited to this camp in Charlotte. Went down and basically ran through a typical practice Royals go through. Did some conditioning drills and also played 2 games of 5 on 5, one at the end of the morning session, one at the end of the afternoon session.
  • Camp/Event
  • Top 64 League
  • 5/31/17 to 7/19/17
  • Summer league that has been going on for several years. My high school coach encouraged a couple of my teammates and myself to play in it this year. Different teams are in it from all over the Southern part of the State of Iowa.
  • Camp/Event
  • Midwest Basketball Showcase
  • 5/26/17 to 5/28/17
  • Basketball Showcase that was held in Omaha. I played in this tournament with the Iowa Battler Club Team that I have played on over the last few seasons. I only list this as an event because it was advertised as a "showcase".
  • Camp/Event
  • Future Star Showcase
  • 5/21/17 to 5/21/17
  • This showcase pledged to have DII, NAIA, JUCO and DIII coaches at the event. After attending this showcase, I am not sure that there were more than a couple of coaches at this event outside of the Dowling folks. Anyway, it was a good experience. There was a skills combine that was similar to the NBA combine that is currently being shown on television. We also played three regulation high school games that were ref'd by college officiating crews. All athletes that attended were given a skills combine assessment card as well.
  • Camp/Event
  • Snow Valley
  • 7/20/16 to 7/24/16
  • This camp is extremely good. Snow Valley works on all facets of the game and we work around the clock. Not like a lot of camps where you just play pickup games and maybe get a little work on fundamentals. This was the 4th year of attending this camp. Am planning on attending it every year until graduation. Snow Valley is in its 23rd year, located at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa for five weeks. It has become one of the premier camps for individual skill enhancement. We are committed to helping campers improve their individual basketball skills in all areas of the game. Snow Valley Iowa Basketball Our Ethos Snow Valley basketball camp culture has been built around the 4 pillars, the four C's: Choices, Comfort Zone, Communication, Compete. We expect each and every camper to adhere to these 4 building blocks of our basketball culture.
  • Camp/Event
  • Breaktrhrough Basketball
  • 10/04/15 to 10/04/15
  • This camp promises to boost my shooting percentage will up, improve mechanics, and will increase shooting range. In addition to all of this, we will focus on confidence, mental toughness, hard work, smart work, and other intangibles to develop great shooters.
  • Camp/Event
  • Breakthrough Basketball
  • 3/27/15 to 3/29/15
  • In this 3-day camp you will improve your overall skills like ballhandling and shooting -- however a big emphasis of the camp will be "decision making"... Players will learn when to pass, when to shoot, when to dribble, when to drive, angles to take, how to be more aggressive, and more. The BDT methods will: •Train the mind of players to make faster decisions within the practice environment •Improve the ability to think and act in decisive ways •Develop a confident attacking mindset •Learn how to train your mind not just physical skills •Improve your motivation for training through the use of musical rhythm •Identification, cause and correction of the most common fundamental errors •Knowledge of the skills necessary to catch, shoot, dribble and attack on offense •Game-like understanding of the application of perimeter offensive skills During the camp, Coach Oliver will use decision training drills and musical rhythm to enhance the teaching of basketball's most important offensive skills - shooting, passing, dribbling and 1 on 1 moves. Combining decision training with musical rhythm enhances the learning experience for the player due to: •Increases in motivation •Stimulation of creativity •Development of an awareness of basketball rhythm •Repetition of all the fundamentals without getting bored •Work is done with effortless concentration •Development and refinement of basketball skills at game speed •Awareness of the continual possibility of improvement Coaches will promote a fun and safe environment that encourages positive and purposeful learning experiences. • Camp/Event
  • D1 Experience
  • 8/05/14 to 8/07/14
  • The D1 Experience Skills Clinic is designed to give players and coaches an opportunity to learn from two of the best in the business, Alan Stein and Drew Hanlen. The skills clinic will focus on improving basketball athleticism, individual basketball skills improvement, as well as film study. This camp was exceptional and I feel like I really learned more things to work on to improve my overall game.
