Personal Statement

I'm Joe Gaffney, and my entire life has been dedicated to the game of basketball. I am reaching out to express my sincere desire for an opportunity to take my passion for this sport to the next level. While I acknowledge that a career in basketball may not be a permanent one, I am committed to utilizing the sport as a way to further my education and build a successful future.

My primary goals extend beyond the court; I am eager to pursue higher education, aiming to be successful in ways that go beyond basketball. While I am still fortunate enough to play the game I love, I am determined to make the most of this opportunity. This involves hard work and dedication, but it also includes meeting new people and stepping out of my comfort zone both on and off the court.

Throughout my life, I have consistently worked towards the goal of continuing my athletic and academic career at the collegiate level. I invite you, as coaches, to believe in my character and leadership. My commitment extends to my academics, where I maintain goals that go beyond basketball.

In conclusion, I emphasize my dedication to putting in the extra effort—whether it's additional repetitions, extra hours in the gym, or investing extra time in mastering the game. I appreciate your time and consideration.

  • If a coach at the next level wants a player that’s a steal, Gaffney is a great player to start with. Ignore his height, because he can and will beat taller defenders all day long. Gaffney can drive and get to the paint if a defender steps out. If they play off him, he’ll bury a triple. Gaffney is incredibly smart and efficient with the ball.
  • Camp/Event
  • Prep Hoops Michigan - Top 250 Expo
  • 9/10/23 to 9/10/23
  • Only player recognized from Team 19 at the event. Received the following recognition: "Coming off a big freshman campaign. The Northern Michigan point guard is off to a good start in the fall. Not very big. Offsets that with a strong lower body. Jumps off a two feet on drives. Also keeps defenses honest with deep range on the perimeter. Good ball handler and distributor as well."
  • Camp/Event
  • Ferris Elite Mens Basketball Camp
  • 8/19/23 to 8/19/23
  • Received the following recognition and feedback from the staff at PrepHoops: "Gaffney continued to show the skill set that has him in early contention for the top spot in the 2026 class regionally. Not very big but makes up for it in a variety of ways. Almost like a running back plays with a low center gravity. Also jumps off two feet on drives. Helps him play with aggression while maintaining control. Isn’t going to pick up silly offensive fouls. Is a good shooter with very deep range. Helps defenses honest and open up driving lanes. More than just a scorer. Good live dribble passer who plays with his head up. I raved about Jarmu’s athletic testing. Gaffney wasn’t far behind. Posted an eye opening max vert of 10’10. That was right up there with the other high flyers in the camp."
  • Camp/Event
  • Alma College Elite Mens Basketball Camp
  • 8/12/23 to 8/12/23
  • Received the following feedback from Steve Bell of BankHoops scouting service: "A rare underclassman here, but you wouldn't know it by how he fit in and competed. May ultimately be limited by size, but he will max out his talent based on work ethic, track record and improvement."
  • Camp/Event
  • Huffman Elite Camp
  • 7/09/23 to 7/09/23
  • Received the following feedback from Jonathan Gilbert, talent scout for PrepHoops Michigan: "Coming off a big freshman season. Gaffney showed why he had earned some early accolades. Not very big but plays with absolutely no fear. Keeps defenses honest with a pure and efficient outside shot. Plays with a low center of gravity that aids his shiftiness and speed. While he will most likely be a point guard long term. Has already showed plenty of scoring ability. Averaged nearly 15 points per game with some high shooting percentages."
  • Camp/Event
  • Prep Hoops Expo
  • Smallest player on this list. But made up for it by playing with a high level of moxie. Showed advanced ball handling ability and was able to get to his spots easily. Also showed no fear in attacking the basket. Part of a storied program going through some transition. Gaffney has a chance to turn some heads early with a new coach and a new system. Was a prolific scorer at the middle school level.
  • Camp/Event
  • NEO Elite National Showcase
  • NEO Elite National Showcase Top 20 ALL-STAR: Joe Gaffney -displayed an exceptional set of shooting skills as well as court vision. Joe knows to set up his teammates up when needed and when to attack the basket when needed. Gaffney’s ability to attack the basket and finish with either hand at the rim made it very difficult for defenders to keep him in front of them. Joe’s ability to attack, set up his strongest asset which was shooting from the outside. By far one of the top shooters in the 7th grade division this weekend.
