Hello, my name is Ethan Ortiz, point guard for the class of 2020. I am 17 years old and I have been playing basketball since the age of nine. For majority of my career I have been playing two years up. This early experience helped me mature quicker and have a better sense of what to focus on in my strides to playing at the next level. In my second year of high school, I was guaranteed a spot on the varsity team because of my abilities shown in my first year, however I decided to play again on the junior varsity team. It may seem like the wrong decision, but this commitment helped me turn myself into the point guard that is ready to play at the collegiate level.
From the time my father introduced me into the game of basketball, it has been engraved into my life ever since. I can now see that basketball brings more meaning to my life, it taught me personality shaping skills and left me with memories that have a purpose greater than just for memorabilia. I have always been an athletic player capable of playing various positions, despite my height. I am a quick, deep range shooter with strong ball handling and a naturally high IQ that I am continuing to develop. Although, bringing solid defence will always be my favourite part of the game, that is how I was first taught to play and how I will always play it. I know that if my offence is slow one game, my defence will be able to bring my energy up and propel me forward. I was not always the “scorer type” however, I had to constantly work, and know I am able to say that I am typically the primary target for the opposing teams.
The year that I chose junior varsity over varsity was the year where I made a step towards being a college point guard. That year I was able to enhance my leadership qualities. I was predominantly a leader by example before, but that season pushed me to be more of a vocal leader. During this season, I learned what it meant to be a real captain and was able to see first hand what the benefits of sacrifice and commitment are. I am looking for a program that will aid me academically as well as being as competitive as possible athletically. Every team I have been on I have made a direct impact, and I believe it will be the same for a college program. With my mixture of work-ethic, composure, coachable character, and leadership, I am confident that I will be able to be productive and a high energy player for your program.
