Personal Statement

Hello, my name is Derek J Massey Frye. I usually go by DJ. A little bit about my self  my last year in High school Basketball (2019-2020) I received 3rd team Allstate (4a)  (Desert news) 3rd team all area (standers examiner) ( Northern Utah) and 1st team all Region X (10) 4a league. Mygoal in the next five years is to improve my game every year so that I can be the best player I can be for me and my team.  My aspirations are very high for myself. through hard work in the classroom and with hard work on the court. I am a good candidate for any program because I am a hard worker in both the classroom and the court. I am a good listener who is willing to learn different positions to become a better all around player. For example until this year I was a wing player and combo guard. This year I had too sacrificed for my team and playing on the. I feel that I will be an asset to any program because I can score or set up my team for buckets. I am a prime defender guarding bigs or guards. I can score inside and out. I love the game and no coach will never say I am not a hard worker.  All I ask is that you give me the chance I will have earned and no coach or school will be sorry they chose me for the opportunity. I will make the school who chooses me proud that I am part of their institution. My goal after playing pro ball is to become a coach/teacher or lawyer . I plan on being a person who makes the world hopefully a better place to live by also giving back to my community to repay those have helped me as young man. I would like to add that I also love giving back to the community and I have high character I attend church and help those who are in need!

  • The combine consisted of 120 payers ranging from 11th graders to be to JC Players. You are divided into teams of 10 before the combine and you are coached by JC coaches from the west Coast mainly. I played for the Treasure valley team. You get at least half the game playing time. I played the 2 and 3 at this combine. I had 12 pts, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals and a block in game 1. In game 2 I had 15 pts, 7 rebounds, 2 assists , 4 steals and two blocks. In Game 3 I had 14 pts, 6 rebounds , 5 assists, 4 steals and 4 blocks. In my report card from my coach graded on a 1-5 with 5 being the best. I had 4 for shooting, 3 for passing, 4- ball handling, 3 -for rebounding, 3-team defense and 5-for defense on the ball. I went 6/6 from the line for the combine and had 2 turnovers for the combine. My coach said I played pretty well and he loved how I ran the floor and how well I guarded multiple positions.

  • I played in the Mountain Hoops Team Tournament with my High School Bonneville High. I played JV and Varsity. I led my JV team in scoring and rebounding while playing about 3/4 of the game getting about 18 and 10. In the varsity games I averaged about 14 and 7. I played all 3 front court positions on both teams. I guarded 5 positions on Varsity. I played very well my coaches told me. They like my improvement and my work ethic. They stated they can see my improvement from the time I am practicing on my own. The team made the quarter finals. I have grown to 6'4 and I still have my point guard skills and now I am comfortable also playing in the post and/or perimeter with equal accord.

My coaches said they are impressed with my stamina of me playing 4-5 times again.

I played really well in the league although my team played decent. I also played Junior Varsity about half the game and averaged about 16 ppg and 10 rpg in playing about half to a little over half in some games because I was starting Varsity.
  • Camp/Event
  • Mountain Hoops Elite Camp
  • 3/24/18 to 3/24/18
  • The Mountain Hoops Camp was camp that divided individual player from the 10th grade to JC players into teams pre organized and the teams played 3 games. It was 16 teams of 10 players each. Each Team was was coached by a JC Coach from Washington, Idaho, California, Wyoming, Idaho, Arizona and Colorado. I played the 2 on my team. My coach was the head coach from Everett JC. I played well and increased my points every game starting with 11 in the first game and the 17 in the last game. I was the youngest player on my team as there was one player going into the 12th, The rest of my team consisted of players graduating in 2018 or already Post graduates. My coach's eedback to me was to get stronger in the weight room and to continue to play hard. He also told me that I have a good basketball IQ and that I am a hard guy to stay in front of. He also said that I compete really well on both offense and defense and that it was nice to see that I don't turn the ball over a lot.

  • Utah State University Elite Camp
  • 6/19/17 to 6/21/17
  • I played point guard at the camp and played on the Varsity Level at the camp with 6 teams comprised of 6 players each. I did really well at the camp. I was one of 6 players to make all-star and the only in-coming 10th grader. I got excellent in all ratings except for shooting, which I got a good in, saying I need to be more consistent with my jumpshot and a good in rebounding saying I need to be a little more active on the boards. My ares I was most proud of were my defense and my ability to score as well as the coaches saying I am easy to coach and that I listen well and that I want to get better.
  • Camp/Event
