Diving was a sport I hadn’t even considered until freshman year of high school, but I quickly learned I had a natural talent for it. I have always had a passion to try new things and practice them over and over until they meet my standards, which has helped me improve my skills and grow as a diver. There are many things to love about diving, but I think my favorite is the individuality of the sport; my success is determined by my own drive to work hard and excel, not by anyone else’s. My coaches say I am a very coachable athlete; I think this is because I know there is always something I can improve, so I constantly push myself to be better. Moments of stress and intense pressure seem to drive me to be my best, and losing only motivates me to push harder to achieve my goals.
My greatest achievement so far was at the end of my sophomore year. I had not been able to practice for a week due to a double ear infection, and I was almost benched from the sectionals team because of the pain. But it had been my goal all year to make it back to state and I am not one to quit. I rose up to the challenge, dove with disks in my ears, and managed to claim the last spot at state. A week later I ended up making it to the state finals, which was another of my goals for the season. This showed me that if I am confident and determined, I can overcome any challenge that stands in my path.
My goals now are shifting to the future; I want to podium at state by my senior year, and ultimately, bring these same qualities of hard work and determination to a university dive team.
