My name is Brad Riley and as long as I can remember I have loved sports and competition. I played high end travel baseball from age 7 – 14 and my teams had much success, winning many travel tournaments in Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania. Our best year was when I was 10 and we had 65 wins and 3 losses. Several of my teammates have moved on to play Division 1 baseball. I also played travel basketball from the age of 8 until recently when I completed my senior season in March 2018, as the starting varsity point guard Sherwood’s basketball team.
But my favorite sport has always been golf. As a younger child I did not have a lot of time to practice and play due to my travel leagues for baseball and basketball but I played much as possible. After my freshman year in high school I stopped playing baseball to have more time to improve my golf game. I began monthly lessons with the head pro of Norbeck Country Club Mike Barillo. We have worked hard over the past three years changing my swing, adjusting my grip and working on my short game. This past summer I started to see a dramatic improvement in my game. I won the Dewey Ricketts WMGA Tournament shooting 72 and 74 at Crofton Country Club in August 2017. This past fall I won the individual Maryland State High School championship shooting 74 and 71 to beat the previous year’s winner by two shots.
I have chosen to take a gap year starting in the Fall of 2018. I plan to take a some college classes at my local community college and work daily on my golf game. I will be playing in numerous tournaments this summer and I am very optimistic that with hard work and my natural athletic ability my game will continue to grow this year. I very much look forward to playing golf in college starting in the fall of 2019.
