My name is Sam Aldrich. I am a 6-foot golfer from Woodsville High School. I have a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. I have been playing golf since I was in the 6th grade but I did not start playing competitively until my freshman year of high school. Golf is my main sport and my favorite.
At the start of my freshman year, there were 14 spots to make and 22 golfers at tryouts. With 2 golfers on the roster committed to playing in college, my goal was to make a spot on the team. With some summer training and with pro coaching help I was able to make the roster over some sophomores and juniors. I started off the season on the junior varsity team with 8 other golfers; only 6 would be able to play in matches. I started the season slow shooting 24 over in my first match, with coaching Help from Bill Sackett and some of the varsity golfers 2 that are now playing at the collegiate level I was able to shoot a career-best of 12 over. Towards the end of the season, I was able to make the varsity 8 and go to my first varsity match. Playing on the varsity roster gave me more time to learn from some of the upperclassmen Golfers and the varsity Coach Brent Cox. Although I was not chosen to play in the state match the varsity team I got to play with ended up winning the state title. Some things I took away from the season to work on were practicing with my irons and working on straightening my shot.
At the start of my sophomore season, I easily made the team and was chosen to be a varsity swing. My game got a lot better and my season best from my freshman year became one of my lower scores of the season. Playing varsity and JV gave me more practice time and more matches I could participate in. I was lucky enough to play in some key varsity matches and learn from both of my coaches. I was able to help some of the freshmen and new golfers who had made the team learn the course etiquette and help them improve their game. My high of the season was 5 over par. It was me vs one of my teammates for the 6th spot to play in the state match, unfortunately, the coach chose the other golfer because he had more varsity experience and was very consistent but he brought me along to teach me and showed me how some of the other golfers played. My handicap went from 26 in my freshman season to 16 at the end of my sophomore season. I was very happy with the opportunities that were given to me this season. My take always from my sophomore season was to work on putting smart choices of clubs to use in certain situations.
I am now preparing for my junior season this fall. Currently, I am at a 12.6 handicap and hope to drop it below a 6. My other goal is to make it to states and to state individuals. I am taking golf more seriously than ever now, practicing in the range for 2 hours a day and playing the course every day, I am also starting to practice chipping and putting an hour a day. My goal is to play at the collegiate level. I am most interested in attending a community college but would take any opportunity a school gives me. With the help of my Coach, Teammates, and Family I hope to keep improving my game.
