Is golf a sport or a past time? This debate is commonplace among sportscasters, around the clubhouse, and between friends on the back nine. My name is Cameron Vazquez and my view on golf is not as easily defined as others. Golf is my passion. Golf runs through my veins. Golf is my life.
I am not the first golfer in the Vazquez family. I remember being three-years-old on the golf course watching my father, grandfather, and uncle use a nine-iron at Mendham Country Club. My true interest in golf began at age four, when I was invited to join the six-year-old golf camp after the club coaches saw my interest and passion to play and participate. This experience was the beginning of a long journey of personal accomplishments and challenges that transformed me into the person I am today.
As a young child, learning to read was a challenge. I learned to advocate for myself and identify my weaknesses in order to improve. During this time, being on the golf course was not only therapeutic, but my time to shine. As I perfected my golf stance, and developed a stronger swing, I was able to identify and thrive in a sport I was learning to love. On the course, I navigated and learned from a variety of social situations and etiquette, interacting with golfers of all ages and experience levels. I emerged as a strong communicator. In high school, I strive for a well-balanced experience, balancing academics, sports, and a social life. My high school coach channeled my leadership skills early on, relying on me to mentor younger players. Serving in this role was not only gratifying, but a true compliment. I soon earned the title “Rookie of the Year”.
Pursuing golf in college is not only a goal, it is my mission. Being able to golf at a university that pushes players to the next level, and values effort and perseverance to become the best player possible, is what I strive for. I want to become the golfer that an inspiring three-year old watches, with hopes of one day following in my footsteps. Golf is my life and your university will be the next chapter.
